Senior mridangam vidwan, Thinniyam Krishnan has been chosen to receive the DKJ Memorial Award this year. The veteran will be honoured with a purse of Rs. 5,000, on January 25, 6 p.m., at a function to be held at the Gokhale Sastry Hall, Luz. Krishnan is equally adept at playing the veena and has taught students both mridangam and veena. A retired staff of All India Radio, Thinniyam Krishnan initially trained in mridangam under Thinniyam Sethurama Iyer and Tiruchi Raghava Iyer. Intense training under the gurukula system came later from Thinniyam Venkatrama Iyer. Krishnan is skilled in playing for pallavis set to difficult and rare talas. He has many honours to his credit, including `Kalaimamani.'
