Asianet’s ‘Mammootty-The Best Actor Award 2009’ is a talent hunt to discover an outstanding actor.
Think Bollywood and Kollywood and the list of promising new faces in those industries are impressive. Think Mollywood, and the list is rather dismal. Promising to introduce talented actors into Mollywood is ‘Mammootty-The Best Actor Award 2009.’
A new reality show on Asianet, ‘Mammootty-The Best Actor Award 2009’ is a hunt for an outstanding actor. Launched on July 25, this weekly programme is currently into its eighth episode.
While over a thousand are said to have applied for the show, only 16 were selected to participate in the contest. Says Sindhu Sreedhar, producer of ‘Mammooty-The Best Actor Award 2009’: “We were actually planning on 10 contestants, but when director Siddique, who is a judge on the show, noticed the number of talented artistes, we decided to increase it to 16.”
Says Siddique: “There are a lot of shows to spot singers and dancers; this show is a great way to unearth those with acting potential. And these kids have talent. I’m sure they will be able to make their mark in Mollywood.”
Till date, the actors have been showcasing their own acts on stage. While one actor depicted a man who fluctuates between a mourner and a chatterbox while attending a funeral, another played a nit-picking, gossipy woman attending a wedding.
Another played a college boy who claims that Mammootty is a family friend. When his friends ask him to bring an autography of Mammootty’s to school, his adventures, while getting one, are portrayed. An interpretation of Meera Jasmine’s character in ‘Perumazhakalam’ was also depicted.
The format takes a turn now; the participants will be enacting characters from Mammooty’s movies. “Male contestants will don roles Mammootty played in various movies. Female contestants don roles of the leading ladies in his movies. But they have to be strong performance-oriented characters. If they are up to the challenge, they too can play roles from his movies, in fact one of the female contestants, Chinnu, had acted out Mammootty’s role in ‘Rajamanikyam’ complete with juba, sunglasses and a thick Thiruvananthapuram-style Malayalam accent during one of our earlier episodes,” says Sindhu.
From 16 contestants, six contestants will be eliminated in the twelfth episode. “These 10 contestants will then act in short films. These films will be reviewed by a large panel of eminent judges,” says Sindhu.
While film director Siddique and actor Sheela were the permanent judges during the first half of the show, the second half will feature Sheela, T.K. Rajeev Kumar and Urvashi. Guest appearances by celebrities pep up the show.
Only four contestants will make it into the finals. The lucky four will be flown to Dubai for the grand finale in October.
The winner will be announced and awarded by Mammootty himself.
‘Mammooty-The Best Actor Award 2009’ is on every Saturday at 21.00 on Asianet.
