Event City-based Nada Bharathi organised Syama Sastry festival in Kanchi.
The sole purpose of conducting National Syama Sastry Festival by Nada Bharathi, in Kanchi is to preserve, promote and propagate his rare kritis. About 30 vocalists with veterans like Jayamani Narasimhan, Malladi Narayana Sarma, Tadepalli Lokanatha Sarma and P.V. Subba Rao led the short duration concerts. A great contingent of vocalists and instrumentalists from Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh took part in solo and group renditions.
The festivities were opened with nadaswaram concert by Desur Selvaratnam, Asthana Vidwan of Sri Kamakshi Devasthanam. Then Syama Sastry’s portrait was unveiled by Jayendra Saraswathi and Sankara Vijayaendra Saraswathi of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam. ‘Brindavanam’ and ‘Navarathiri mandapam’ in the temple premises were venues for short durations concerts. Nada Bharathi instituted for the first time ‘Syama Sastry Sevaratna’ title was conferred upon Dakshina Murthy (also known as Babu Sastry) and Neelakal Rama Sastry — both belonging to Syama Sastry clan. Desur Selvaratnam of Chennai, noted scholar of Andhra, Kowtha Lalithamanohar and Challa Viswanadha Sastry graced the occasion and felicitated recipients of the title. Another notable event was rendition of ‘Navaratna Malika kritis’ of Syama Sastry. Violinist B.S. Narayanan and mridangam artiste Srinivasa Gopalan accompanied the artistes.
