Chat Maria del Mar Fernandez on life after “Senorita”.
Maria del Mar Fernández is the first Spanish singer to sing a Bollywood song. The popular Spanish Flamenco singer is best known in India for singing “Señorita” in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara .
You were given the chance to sing in the film without any audition. How did you get the break?
It was one of my friends, a Spanish tour manager Belen Castres, who introduced me to the makers of the film. I consider this as my big break because it is a good sign for exposure in the Indian market.
Not many Indians understand Spanish, but still the song “Senorita” has become very popular among the Indian audience…
It is because the Latino-flavoured Spanish Flamenco is about being yourself and having fun. It is full of action and merrymaking. The fusion of clapping, singing loud, dancing and guitar which is all about Flamenco can attract the attention of anybody who witnesses it.
You sang and danced with Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar and Abhay Deol. What do you have to say about them?
Professionally, they are not good singers but as heroes they sang well. Also, I must add that they are good dancers and human beings.
You have no academic training in Flamenco singing. How did you train yourself?
When I was young I used to learn it from my mother who is also not a professional singer. But since Flamenco singing is a tradition in Spain, she knew it. After completing my Higher Secondary education, I began my career as a singer at the age of 14, working with several dance schools of famous Flamenco artistes such as Maria del Mar Gutierrez, Inma and Pilar Salazar Ogalla. I then worked for many famous Flamenco artistes, like Joaquín Cortés, Paco Peña and collaborated on several albums with veteran Flamenco singer and composer Juan Villar on albums like Gitanos de Santa Maria and Lorca and the Flamenco . Then I started travelling and performing around the world, particularly in the U.K., Australia, New Zealand, Israel, the U.S. and South American countries.
Well, I am about to release my debut solo album in Spanish very soon. I am also looking forward to singing Hindi songs with a Spanish flavour, because I found in the two concerts where I sang Spanish songs recently that Indian audiences like and very much enjoy Spanish Flamenco beats. I am in love with Bollywood and would love to try acting too in Indian films.
