Saila Sudha, the academy for Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi, is hosting the second national seminar on classical dances of India titled ‘Tradition-Transition-Transformation’ on September 12 and 13, at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Mylapore.

Senior artists such as Swapnasundari, Madhavi Mudgal, Malavika Sarukkai and Krishnakumari Narendran, scholars and critics will participate and discuss different aspects of Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi and Odissi.

The event will be inaugurated on September 12, 9 a.m., by Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna, while V. Ramnarayan, editor-in-chief, Sruti magazine, will preside. The keynote address will be by M.A. Baby, Minister for Education and Culture, Government of Kerala. On September 12, 10.45 a.m., Bharatanatyam dancer Malavika Sarukkai will present a lec-dem, and this will be followed by a panel discussion in which Leela Venkataraman, Aruna Bikshu and Bhagavatulu Seetharama Sarma will participate. From 5 p.m., performances will be given by Priya Jayaraman (Kuchipudi), Sailaja (Bharatanatyam) and Krishnakumari Narendran (Bharatanatyam ballet). On September 13, 9.30 a.m., Swapnasundari and Madhavi Mudgal will present lec-dems. At 5 p.m., various artists who have contributed to classical dance will be honoured. At 6 p.m., Madhavi will present an Odissi recital and a Kuchipudi recital by Swapnasundari will follow.
