T his month, Vikalp and Smriti Nandan Cultural centre bring you two films from the “Travelling Film South Asia” documentary film festival.

“Afghan Girls Can Kick” by Bahareh Hosseini (50 mins) and “The Battle For Pakistan” by Maheen Zia (40 mins) will be screened on January 7, 6.30 p.m.

The films will be screened at Smriti-Nandan Cultural Centre, Nanda-deep, 15 /3, Palace Road.

The screening is free for members of Smriti Nandan. Others will have to make a donation of Rs. 49.

Bahareh Hosseini's film is about an intimate fly-on-the-wall portrait of teenage girls breaking the stereotypical mould set for them by a conservative society.

They become players in Afghanistan's first ever women's national football team. Zia's film investigates the nexus between extremism and Pakistani madrasas.

It explores the factors behind the mushrooming of madrasas, government attempts at regulation and the socio-political dynamics at play.
