Music Sanjay Sri Balusu's rendition paid attention to intricacies without losing its aesthetic appeal. B.V.S. Bhaskar
Music lovers in Rajahmundry had a chance to listen to Sanjay Sri Balusu, who resides in the US, and gives Carnatic vocal concerts both in India and abroad. His pleasing concert complemented the pleasant winter as he took to stage at the Anam Kala Kendram in Rajahmundry.
The swarakalpana was quite expansive and packed with rhythmic syllables. Tradition and talent vied with each other in the electrifying performance of two-hour long Carnatic vocal recital, which was on the eve of former union minister SBPBK Satyanarayana Rao's first death anniversary.
Privileged to be under the constant expert guidance of Mangalampalli Balamuralikrishna, Sanjay presented the concert steeped in traditional format. Also, his individual flair for special effects shone through the concert. Sanjay's blemishless young voice was perfectly aligned to sruti and laya. The elaboration of Shanmukhapriya was greatly appreciated. The main piece chosen was a Ragam Thanam Pallavi, sung in two ragas Lalitha and Kalyani. Navigating through the two ragas, in all the three sections with great intricacy.
Sanjay started to learn music at the age of six. His grandmother S.B. Rajarajeswari, parents S.B. Krishna Mohan and Radhika put him under the tutelage of P. Ramachandraiah to learn music.
His first public performance was at the age of seven in Madras Doordarshan. This was followed by another at Hyderabad Doordarshan at the age of eight. His first guru Ramachandraiah then took him to M. Balamuralikrishna for advanced training.
Sanjay presented his first full-fledged concert at the same venue, Anam Kala Kendram in Rajahmundry, at the age of nine. While pursuing his post graduation in the US, Sanjay collaborated with a DJ from Belgium and experimented with fusion music, combining elements of Progressive House and Carnatic classical music.
Sanjay teaches vocal music to interested students in the US. Sanjay graduated in B.E. Mechanical Engineering from Anna University, Chennai and did his MS in Industrial and Systems Engineering from University of Wisconsin and is currently an executive at IBM, USA.
