Afour-day Kalabharati-AS Raja State Level playlet competition showcased a variety of themes at Kalabharati Visakhapatnam. In all, eight playlets from different regions took part.
Though Parishad competitions had helped Telugu social theatre grow providing platform for amateur troupes, over a period it seemed to have fixed the template of the themes, what in plain words came to be known as Parishad format. And this parishad was no exception. The organisers essayed well to present contemporary playlets but that Telugu social drama remains basically family centric with its focus on sentiment was once again proved in an unambiguous manner.
The glory and grandeur of the Telugu language, sublime friendship, corruption in public life, political chicanery, wretched plight and the helplessness of the less privileged in society and unprofessional practices in media are the strands that found theatrical expression in the playlets. Though the festival lacked in thematic novelty, it was rich in performance.The fest commenced with playlet Chengalva Poodanda , staged by artistes of Hyderabad-based Sri Kala Niketan, and went on to win the second prize.
Revolving around the management of a corporate school, which derides the mother tongue Telugu and even prohibits speaking it on its premises, the narrative sought to portray the grace and grandeur of Telugu language and literature and its importance. Packed with emotional appeal of glories of culture and heritage, it evoked warm response.
Diksuchi (Compass) bagged the first prize. Artistes of Hyderabad-based Natyanjali enacted with precision. It dealt with ego clashes between a young couple driving home the point that appreciation of each others' job and working hours between employed young couple ensures a happy family life.
Kakinada-based Sri Murthy Cultural Association presented Sanchalanam (Sensation) that secured third prize.
It was about unethical and unprofessional fabricated news coverage by a section of the media in the name of sensational news to boost their TRP ratings and the havoc it plays with the lives of its victims.
Artistes of Pithapuram-based Sri Manikantha Arts enacted Aachandra Taarakam that highlighted the importance of true friendship in human relations. Treatment by Jayakala Niketan Visakhapatnam, Pushkarini by Pandu Creations Koppolu, Tapputadugulu by Creators Palakollu and Sreyojeevanam by Ushodaya Arts Venigandla are the other playlets that competed. Bobby Vardhan, M.V.V. Gopalarao and B. Dhavaleswar Rao were adjudicators and K.G. Venu and his team convened the fest.
