An evening of theatre and music today
Crossword, Bangalore, in association with Ridhdhi, a non-profit charitable trust, has an evening with renowned theatre personality Bibhash Chakraborty and promising classical singer Riju Dasgupta on September 11, 2009, at Crossword, Residency Road. While Bibhash Chakraborty will be sharing his theatre experiences and influences, Riju Dasgupta will take us along a journey of the raga.
One of the most prominent actor and director of Bengal, working with theatre stalwarts like Shombhu Mitra, Utpal Dutta and Ajitesh Bandhopadhay, Bibhash Chakraborty began his career as an acting trainee acting at Bohurupee and later joined Nandikar at Bondhapadhay’s invitation in 1963.
Recipient of the Best Director Award by Natya Academy of West Bengal, Bibhash Chakraborty also received the Sangeet Nataka Academy Award in 1989.
He served as a producer for Kolkata Doordarshan for a while. Since 1988, he has been a freelance director for many theatre groups. Some of his memorable plays during this stint are Rangakarmee’s “Varna”, Nandipat’s “Mritu na Hatya” based on Dario Fo’s “Accidental death of an anarchist”.
Besides theatre, he has directed television serials, acted in films, written plays and articles on theatre.
Riju Dasgupta, a young musician, has been training under his guru, Pt Ajoy Chakravarty for last 14 years and still continues to be at Shrutinandan.
