When you enjoy music at the Dhwani-BKF Pandit Mallikarjun Mansur Music Festival, you’re also donating for a free dialysis programme

The sixth Dhwani-BKF Pandit Mallikarjun Mansur Music Festival-2009, a two-day musical extravaganza, will take off on September 12.

Pandit Mallikarjun Mansur, the legendary Hindustani classical musician from Karnataka was brought to Bangalore Kidney Foundation’s (BKF)’s dialysis centre in 1991 in a critical state, where he was stabilised. After that when he gave a full-fledged concert, he decided to donate the entire proceeds of that concert to the BKF.Though his music flowed freely for several years, the kidney disease overtook this unparalleled maestro and Panditji breathed his last on September 12. 1992.

Since the last six years, the BKF has held a Hindustani music festival in memory of Pandit Mansur each year during September.

The Bangalore Kidney Foundation has instituted the Pandit Mallikarjun Mansur Award, which is given to a teacher-cum-musician of Hindustani classical music. The Award consists of a bronze bust of Pandit Mansur, a shawl, a citation, and a cash award of Rs. 50,000.

On September 12, at 6 p.m., the Kedia Bandhu – Mormukut on the sitar and Manoj on the sarod will present a jugalbandi, with Udayraj Karpoor on the tabla. At 7.45 p.m., the Award will be presented to Vidushi Dhondutai Kulkarni, followed by her vocal concert at 8 p.m. The 82-year-old Vidushi Dhondutai Kulkarni, a disciple of the legendary Kesarbai Kerkar, will be accompanied by Namita Devidayal. On September 13, at 10 a.m., there will be a vocal concert by Pandit Satyasheel Deshpande, followed by another concert at noon by Ustad Raza Ali Khan (grandson of Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan). At 6 p.m. Pandit Kaivalyakumar Gurav will present a vocal concert, followed by a concert at 8 p.m. by Alka Deo Marulkar.

The proceeds of the festival are utilised for the BKF’s “one free dialysis a day”. All concerts are at the JSS Auditorium, 1st main, 8th Block, Jayanagar.
