If only the climax had been different

Bottomline: Good story goes sour"Kalabak-k-Kadhalan" begins on a happy note. Young Arya marries the girl (Renuka Menon) he wants to. The zest with which the couple, absolutely in love with each other, approach life, the romance and intimacy make viewing a pleasure. But it is too good to be true. In walks Kanmani, the wife's sister, and things turn topsy-turvy. The hero has a problem to handle and does he solve it? Director Igore, who guides the story in the right direction falters after half-time and in fact makes a mess of the climax. The whole story is told in a flashback, a factor the viewer almost forgets until the last scene. The story moves at a brisk pace in the first half. Arya and Menon make a charming pair. Even the arrival of the sister (Akshaya) is manoeuvred in a clever way without jarring the flow. When she shows undue interest in the hero, one thinks it is momentary and the story would move in a different direction. But that is not to be. The dubbed voice does not quite suit Renuka. And Arya should work on emotions a little more. Makeup plays tricks with Akshaya's looks, radiant one moment and dull the next. Ilavarasu as the father of the sisters acquits himself well. Vanitha Krishnan proves that she is a seasoned artist. `Nizhalgal' Ravi, Veena and Pavan are the others in the cast. Balakumaran's dialogue is crisp and R. Mathi's visuals certainly enhances the proceedings. The hero's swanky apartment, filled with aesthetic objects, steals the show, thanks to Milan, art director. The glass swing, especially, is a winner. Music director Niru has worked hard and at least two numbers are good. Director Igore's one-line story has several ingredients to make it interesting. It is the climax that comes as a damp squib diluting the impact. S. R. ASHOK KUMAR
