`Vedham Pudhidhu' Kannan turns director with `Amirdham,' releasing today.

`Vedham Pudhidhu' Kannan is a happy man. He is making his debut as director with "Amirdh am." And the phone has not stopped ringing after the sneak preview. This augurs well for the film, which Kannan is producing and for which he has written the script too. Kannan has worked with K. Balachander, Bharatiraja, Sp. Muthuraman, Bharathan and V . M. C. Hanifa. ``Vedham Pudhidhu" won him the national award for story and screenplay. He wrote the dialogue for the tele-serials "Anni," "Sahana," "Nimmadhi Ungal Choice" and "Akka" (the last in Telugu). He has also written and directed telefilms. Ove r to Kannan on his new venture: "Amirdham" means a lot to me. When we started, I was ready to sacrifice anything to make the film a box office success. We got some of the best artistes and technicians. Girish Karnad gladly agreed to act when I narrated t he story to him. He plays the heroine's father, a temple priest. Singer Anuradha Kishnamurthy does the mother's role.

``Another highlight of the film is the m usic composed by Bhavadharini. She finished the re-recording in three days. The songs, one of which Ilayaraja has sung, have come out well." What about the storyline? Ezhuthuppatarai's first production "Amirdham" is an enjoyable story happening in a Br ahmin family. It is a love tale that has a social problem running as the common thread. Faith in God, as expressed by Karnad, is in conflict here with atheism professed by hero Ganesh. The dialogue therefore is powerful, something Kannan is known for. ` `Selecting the cast involved painstaking effort," says Kannan. ``The heroine is Navya Nair, who drew attention with her performances in `Azhagiya Theeye,' `Chidambarathil Oru Appasamy' and `Pasakkiligal.' She took just seven hours to finish the dubbin g. Remember the dialogue has an Iyengar accent and Navya has worked hard to get it right," the director is all praise for the young actress . Rajeev appears as a wealthy landlord, who is also a nagaswaram vidwan. Rekha (of `Kadalora-k-Kavidhai') plays his wife. Yugendran dons a negative role while Bangalore beauty Madhura acts as his ladylove. Ranjitha plays a District Collector and `Nizhalgal' Ravi is a police officer. The film's shooting was held at various places including Mysore, Mel Kottai, Kasi , Rishikesh and Haridwar. K.V. Mani has handled the camera while art department is headed by G.K. "I am sure the film will be a hit at the box office," concludes `Vedam Pudhidu' Kannan on an optimistic note.
