Rendering Annamacharya kritis with devotional fervour

It is no exaggeration to say that Garimella Balakrishna Prasad breathes Annamacharya Sankeertanas. A retired staff member of T.T.D. Annamacharya Project and a dedicated singer who specialised in composing and rendering Annamacharya keertas, Prasad has tuned more that 500 keertanas of the Sankeertanacharya in 120 ragas. He his early musical training from his parents and later he came under the tutelage of luminaries such as M. Balamuralikrishna, Nedunuri Krishna Murthy and D. Pasupathi.

The Governorpet Branch of State Bank of Vijayawada recently had organised a week-long feast of Annamacharya Sankeertanas at the Sri Venkateswara Temple, Labbipet, where Balakrishna Prasad rendered around 180 keertanas. .

On July 4 the programme, ‘Annamacharya Sankeertana Yagnam’, was inaugurated by Sasikantananda Swamiji of Ramakrishna Mission. K.S. Subramanian, Deputy General Manager of S.B.I was the president of the inaugural meeting and Vidwan Annavarapu Ramaswamy was the chief guest.

Some of the keertanas rendered by Prasad were Innitiki Moolamu (malahari), Deva Sikhamani (bowli), Piluvare (desh), Jayamu Jayamu (saveri), Hari Hara Nama (rasikaranjani), Dachko (aarabhi), Deva Devothamathe (yadukula kambhoji), Vachenu Alamelmanga (hindola), Tagudunamma (brindavani) and Adi Deva Paramatma in sindhubhairavi. Palaparthi Nageswara Rao on violin, M. Lakshminarayana Raju on mridangam and K.Sayi Giridhar on tabla rendered excellent support.N. Suresh, AGM, SBI honoured the singer and the accompanists. Credit should also go to K.V. Maruthi Rao, branch manager for organising the mega event. The ‘yagnam’ concluded with spectacular ‘Unjal Seva’.
