Matter of minutes

Significance of time: Minutes
Significance of time: Minutes

Of two short films recently seen.

Two shorts, aptly titled ‘Future’ and ‘Minutes,’ and each running to about 20 minutes, were screened at the AVM Studio complex recently. The enthusiasm of the crew was palpable. Bustling about the premises they were intently observing the reactions of the audience.

“We are glad that we’ve been able to get a packed house here. It boosts our morale and makes us believe we can also make full-length features ,” said J. Rajesh Kumar, writer-director of the two films. The optimism also rose out of the fact that ‘Future’ is “the first Tamil short film to be selected for telecast on Sony Pix.”

Interesting lines

RP played by Harish Chowdhary is the only character in ‘Future’ — in fact, the only actor in the short. This well-educated man’s father wants him to take up the prestigious job he’s got but the youth’s interest lies in acting. Dad’s ultimatum puts him in a quandary. His inner self emerges before him on the small screen in front of him, plays out his future for him and gives him just 20 seconds to choose his path. Though slightly contrived, the film has its moments of suspense.

‘Minutes’ has Jose playing the young vagabond Deva. Suddenly one day, a voice on his mobile announces that it’s willing to grant him anything he wishes for, but within the time frame it stipulates. The expressive female voice adds to the lure of ‘Minutes.’ As the confused young man taking his own sweet time to believe the voice, Jose does a neat job. Dialogue — humorous, witty and thought-provoking — is a very positive aspect of ‘Minutes.’

Filmmaker Rajesh Kumar seems to be obsessed with the importance of Time and the supernormal. And both his protagonists are clairvoyant — always seeing and hearing things others don’t. Bringing in suspense and raciness to a concept within a very limited span isn’t easy. Rajesh Kumar has managed it quite well.
