The Nada Bharati Sampradaya trinity fest was a treat for music lovers.

A special Ragam-Tanam-Pallavi concert series was held by Nada Bharati at Sri Thyagaraya Gana Sabha, last week, inviting vocalists of repute — Seshulatha, violin maestro Lakshminatayana Sastry of New Delhi, vocalist and violinist K. Seshadri, Akondi Srinivasa Raja Rao of Kakinada and D.Vardhani. The festival started with a performance by young vocalist Venumadhav.

Also part of the festival, Akondi Srinivasa Raja Rao’s vocal was a rare event. He left an indelible mark on the whole festival with his singing. Akondi is the disciple of Nedunuri Krishnamurthy and hence, it’s no surprise that we find in him some traits of his guru including the mannerisms.

He chose Kalyani for his Ata tala varnam and followed it with Deekshitar’s Mahaganapathi with swaram. Yochana in Darbar was a fast number that Akondi rendered with apt punch. Poorvikalyani was the first raga essay he rendered with good sangathis. Kasivisalakshi of Deekshitar was the composition he chose and presented it along with neraval and swaram. Seshulatha picked up the styles of the stalwart musicians she was taught by — Dr. Pinakapani, Voleti and Nedunuri. She is presently working as a lecturer in Potti Sriramulu Telugu University.

Violin solo by Khambampati Lakshminarayana Sastry was another highlight of the festival. His concert was dedicated to his Dwaram gurus — Venkatswami Naidu and Narasinga Rao. With P. Jaya Bhasker on mridangam, Sastry brought back memories of Venkataswamy Naidu in his play.

In the name of the father

Komanduri Anantacharyulu, the renowed vainika whose centenary celebrations are on, was paid a rich tribute by his son Seshadri, a violonist and vocalist.

His vocal concert was accompanied on violin by his son Venkatakrishna. Seshadri vocal opened with Kambhoji atatala varnam and followed by Vatapi in Hamsadhwani with a complex swarakalpana. Makelara Vicharamu of Thyagaraja in Ravichandrika, Mayamma in Ahiri of Syamasastry were neatly rendered carrying the ragabhava. Kambhoji was the raga for varnam and Ragam Tanam Pallavi as well.

His presentation of the raga was scholarly and the pallavi he coined for this Ragam Tanam Pallavi was Thyagaraja Swaminin Anisham Bhajamyaham in Khandajhati triputa. Krishna lent good support on violin to his father. G. Ramachandran on mridangam and Janardan on ghatam lent support.

D. Vardhani’s concert was held in memory of Padma Shri winner Srirangam Gopalaratnam. Vardhani an, A-grade artiste of AIR, is a fine performer with rich vocal culture. She presented Kannada atatala varnam in a fast tempo and then went for Ganapathe in Janaranjani of Muthaiah Bhagavatar marked by good swaras. The audience response on all days was good indicating the success of the festival.
