Top Gun

(HBO Hits, Friday, 9.15 p.m.)

Maverick (Tom Cruise) is a pilot. When he and his wingman encounter a pair of MiGs over the Persian Gulf, the latter is clearly out flown. On almost no fuel, Maverick is able to land his plane. When his wingman turns in his wings, Maverick is moved up in the standings and sent to the Top Gun Naval Flying School. There he fights the attitudes of the other pilots and an old story about how his late father’s erroneous actions in combat led to the death of others.

J. Edgar

(HBO Hits, Sunday, 4.40 p.m.)

This is a biopic that focusses on the career of the legendary FBI director J. Edgar Hoover, beginning from the Palmer Raids onwards to an examination of his private life as an alleged homosexual. It is directed by Clint Eastwood, written by Dustin Lance Black and stars Leonardo DiCaprio as the title character, along with Armie Hammer, Naomi Watts, Josh Lucas, Judi Dench and Ed Westwick.

Number One With a Bullet

(MGM Movies, Friday, 9 p.m.)

Nick and Frank are narcotics cops who are facing a series of failures in their undercover operations. They are convinced that there is a mole in their department and suspect it to be their boss. Nick is the hot-headed one who is still in love with his former wife, and Frank is suave and practical. After they are forced to go on leave, they do their own investigations to bust the crime lord and the mole in their department. Stars Robert Carradine, Billy Dee Williams and Doris Roberts.

House of Games

(MGM Movies, Sunday, 5.30 p.m.)

Margaret Ford is a well-known psychologist who helps one of her patients out of a gambling debt. Her task is to visit the bar where Mike, the guy to whom he owes a debt, runs poker games.

While hanging around, she is to give her patient clues or ‘tells’ – body language that gives away the truth. What starts out as an easy task, becomes more and more difficult.

Lindsay Crouse, Joe Mantegna and Mike Nussbaum are in the cast.

Vertical Limit

(Movies Now, Saturday, 4.30 p.m.)

Annie (Robin Tunney) and her summit team are trapped in an icy grave while climbing the K2 in the Himalayas.

Her brother Peter Garrett (Chris O’Donnell) sets out on the arduous journey to rescue them along with a team of climbers including mountain man Montgomery Wick (Scott Glenn). Will they find Annie and her team members before they freeze to death?

Angels & Demons

(Sony Pix, Saturday, 6.25 p.m.)

Leonardo Vetra is a physicist who is murdered. His daughter Vittoria (Ayelet Zurer) and symbolist Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) go on a quest following this.

Some clues from the secret brotherhood, The Illuminati, leads the two of them all around The Vatican, including the four altars of science, namely Earth, Air, Fire and Water.

An assassin (Nikolaj Lie Kaas), who works for the brotherhood, captures four cardinals and murders each one of them in a gruesome way.

Will Robert and Vittoria find the new destructive weapon that could kill millions of people in time?
