Classic Legends: Meena Kumari

Meena Kumari is one of the most beautiful and talented actresses to grace the silver screen. Born Mahjabeen Bano, she was synonymous with brooding and tragic roles in a career spanning 30 years. Among her best-known roles is the one of Chhoti Bahu in ‘Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam’ (1962), a role which reflected Kumari’s real life story. Her life and career were marred by heavy drinking, troubled relationships, an ensuing deteriorating health, and her death from liver cirrhosis in 1972. Javed Akhtar talks about the original ‘Tragedy Queen” in this episode.
