Cash prize: Students of Empress Government Pre-University College for Girls in Tumkur city who have scored more than 85 per cent in second year PUC examination will get a cash prize of Rs. 2,000. The college has been giving the prize for the past five years.

This year, 21 students, including Manasa from Commerce who has scored 545 out of 600, Kavya T.M. (Commerce-543), Divya A. and Pankaja N. (Commerce-538), Shilpa (Science-531) are being felicitated.

Prinicpal B.Marulaiah said that Rs.1,000 is being given from the college development committee and Rs.1,000 from the Souharda Credit Cooperative Bank.

The total strength of the college is 1,657 and more than 80 per cent of the students come from rural areas and 60 per cent of the students are poor. The college does not have a building of its own and a high school and PU college for girls are being run in the same building in shifts.

From 8 a.m. to 11.30 a.m. the building will accommodate PU students and from 11.30 a.m. to 5 p.m. high school students will be accommodated. Students from interior villages find it difficult to come at 8 a.m.
