When privatisation of higher education took place in India on a large scale, one institute that shot to fame with its quality and innovative courses was the Symbiosis Society.
Established over 30 years ago, the society has about 36 academic institutions in and around Pune and hosts over 45,000 Indian and international students and over one lakh students off campus for different subjects such as management, law, medical sciences, technology and social sciences.
The conglomerate of institutes got deemed university status in 2002 and became Symbiosis International University in 2006.
The university has faculties of law, management, economics, computer studies, media, communication and design, health sciences and geological sciences and undergraduate courses are the main focus.
The university offers several diploma, bachelor’s PG diploma and master’s programmes different disciplines. Symbiosis Institute of Media and Communication offer two-year Master’s programmes in Mass Communication, Communication Management Graduate and Bachelor’s course in Media Studies. Symbiosis Institute of Design offers Bachelor of Design. Symbiosis School of Economics offers three-year B.Sc. in Economics. Symbiosis Institute of Technology offers four-year B.Tech.
Symbiosis Institute of Health Sciences (SIHS) offers MBA in Hospital & Health Care Management and three-year Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology and PG diplomas in Medical Laboratory Technology, Emergency Medical Services, Fitness Management and Imaging Sciences. Symbiosis College of Nursing offers four-year Bachelor of Nursing and two-year Post Basic Bachelor of Science (Nursing). Symbiosis Institute of Geo-informatics offers two-year Master of Science in Geo-Informatics.
Symbiosis Centre for Information Technology offers MBA in IT Business Management, Information Systems & Security, Networks & IT Infrastructure and Software Management and PG diploma in Network & IT infrastructure, IT Project Management, ITES & BPO Management Project Management and IT Management.
Symbiosis Institute of Computer Studies & Research of MBA in IT, Master of Science in Computer Applications, BCA and BBA programme in IT. The university also offers a range of programmes in management at its different colleges in Pune and Bangalore.
Admissions are now open only for diploma and bachelor’s programmes and those who wish to take admission have to take the Symbiosis Admission Test (SET). It has five variants --general, design, law, engineering and health sciences. Students will be tested in general English, quantitative aptitude, general awareness and analytical and logical reasoning.
