Sankranti vacation for Andhra University is continuing when the Justice Sri Krishna Committee report was made public and the three students' organisations propagating Samaikyandhra held demonstration welcoming the report. The report does not bother the Andhra region and the campus saw it being discussed thoroughly. The overall opinion in the campus is that Telangana may not materialise. One students' organisation seeking welfare of north coastal Andhra did not make much noise about the Sri Krishna Commission not saying anything about the region.

Though the day passed like any other day, police did not take chance and was present on the campus.

Help to cancer victim

Management of the Sri Chaitanya educational institutions donated Rs. 81,000 toward treatment of Sai Keerti, daughter of a college attendar P. Ramana, who is suffering with bone cancer. Assistant General Manager K.V. Ramana handed over the money to the child's father.

NSS district youth festival

The district-level youth festival of NSS was organised at the Mrs. A.V.N. College here. As many as 160 NSS volunteers from 36 college participated. Competitions were conducted in different events.

NSS Programme Coordinator of AU P. Ramachandra Rao inaugurated the festival and college Principal R. Kanna Rao presided. Programme Officer of the college M. Simhadri Naidu and others were present.

Help to orphanage

NSS volunteers of Pydah College for Women spent some time with children of PAPA Home orphanage and distributed them tooth brushes, tooth paste, shampoos, alarm clock and wall clock. Principal D. Saroj, NSS PO Anuradha and others were present and president of PAPA Home R.V. Raju, secretary P. Satyanarayana thanked the NSS volunteers.

Road safety programme

An awareness programme on road safety was organised at the Lendi Institute of Engineering and Technology at Jonnada as part of the Road Safety Week.

Motor Vehicle Inspector I. Siva Prasada Rao and Assistant MVI Praveen Kumar of Vizianagaram spoke on road safety and gave a power point presentation on safe driving.

Principal V.V. Rama Reddy presided. College chairman P. Madhusudhana Rao, vice-chairman P. Srinivasa Rao and secretary K. Sivaramakrishna felicitated the guests.

Aditya students win

Students of Aditya Degree College won all-round championship in the Biofest, an annual biosciences meet organised by the V.S. Lakshmi Women's College, Kakinada. By standing first in the seminar and quiz, the college won the overall title and the rolling shield, Principal N.V. Venugopal said.

Wins gold medal

K. Uma, a final year student of PRISM Degree College was member of Andhra team that won gold medal in the 35th senior National tennikoit championships held in Chennai recently.

Uma finished fourth in the singles event. Secretary and correspondent of the college D. Satyanarayana, Principal B. Umabala, Director (PG courses) Srinivasa Rao, students, faculty and staff congratulated Uma.

Ph.D. awarded

A research scholar from Ethiopia Negeri Lencho Bultum received Ph.D. in journalism and mass communication from Andhra University for his thesis “media and communication for development and democratisation in Ethiopia: journalistic practices and challenges”. HoD P. Bobby Vardhan was his research guide.

STEPCONE-2011 held at GMRIT

A two-day national level paper presentation contest and exhibition, STEPCONE-2011, was held at GMR Institute of Technology (GMRIT), Rajam, from Friday.

The festival was inaugurated by the Director of NSTL Bhujanga Rao. The principal of the college C.L.V.R.S.V. Prasad and CAO of GMR Varalakshmi Foundation L.M. Laxman Murthy addressed the students.

Award for AU professor

Former Head of the Department of Computer Science Engineering, Andhra University, P.S. Avadhani was recently given the Distinguished Academician Award in recognition of his contribution to the scientific community and life time achievement in academics and research by Petagram Research Centre, Hyderabad.
