The Union Ministry of Health and the Pharmacy Council of India have introduced the six-year Pharm D or Doctor of Pharmacy programme. This is to provide students intensive training in pharmacy practice and clinical pharmacy service. The first five years of the course are dedicated to academic sessions and the last year is dedicated to internship in a hospital.

In India, education in Pharmacy is available at different levels starting from Diploma to Bachelor’s, Master’s and Ph.D levels. These courses lead to successful careers in the field of research and business. The Pharm D programme is designed with focus on the health care perspective of pharmacy. The course has patient care at its heart and provides extensive training in clinical pharmacy, pharmacy practice and pharmaceutical care. By the end of the course, students understand the responsibilities of a pharmacist in health care, diagnosis and treatment of diseases and therapeutic use of drugs.

Some of the subjects covered in the course include Clinical Pharmacy, Clinical Toxicology, Clinical Pharmacokinetics, Therapeutic Drug Monitoring, Pharmacoepidemiology and Biopharmaceutics. During the internship, students practise pharmacy and health care and acquire relevant skills under the supervision of senior professionals.

After the completion of the course, you will work closely with health care providers, administrative staff, support personnel and the community. You will be working in areas like wellness and health care promotion, accurate and time-sensitive distribution of medication, disease prevention and family welfare. You will be qualified to monitor National Health Programmes and Schemes.
