The University of Mumbai has started a Postgraduate Diploma programme in Philosophy of Communal Harmony and Social Peace, based on the research work of a senior Maharashtra police official. The course, based on the research of the Inspector General of Police (Administration), R.T. Rathod, has been introduced from the current academic year. In September 2002, a Government Resolution (GR) of Home Department asked universities, schools and other institutes in the State to carry out different training programmes on the theme. "The one-year course will have three papers and any graduate can join the university course," said Mr. Rathod. The curriculum includes understanding society, reforming Indian society, citizenship and human rights and communal harmony, peace as a value and legal provisions, he said, adding that faculty members, including himself, would be drawn from institutes such as the Tata Institute of Social Sciences.
