The job-oriented inter-disciplinary M.Tech course in Materials Science offered by the University of Mysore holds many opportunities for students in India and abroad. Sponsored by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under the University for Potential for Excellence (UPE), the course is designed keeping in mind the demands of the industry and research and development (R and D) institutions in India and abroad.

“The degree is in demand abroad and has great job prospects in the country too,” says L. Byrappa, coordinator of the course. “The practical training helps candidates pursue higher studies or get into premier R and D laboratories in the country as well as abroad.”

The total intake for the course is 30 and the admission is based on the marks obtained in the entrance examination. Undergraduate degree holders from B.Sc, B.E., BDS, B.Pharma, MBBS and B.Sc (Agriculture) and M.Sc can apply.

The duration of the course is three years for B.Sc degree students, who can go for lateral exit after two years and get an M.Sc Materials Science degree. Besides six common papers, the course has elective subjects that can be selected based on the candidates’ interest and educational background, Prof. Byrappa said. Nanotechnology, nanochemistry, nanophysics, materials for energy storage, carbon nanotubes, ceramics engineering, chemical engineering, composites, nanobiomaterials, nanobiotechnology, healthcare, and thermochemical modelling can be studied as specialised subjects during the course.

Senior professors and experts from physics, chemistry, biotechnology, microbiology, polymer science, earth science departments and other national laboratories will teach at the varsity.

Entrance test

The last date for issuing and receiving applications is September 10. An entrance test will be conducted on September 12 at Vignana Bhavan at 11 a.m. The list of selected candidates will be announced on September 13 and admissions begin the same day.

The classes will commence from September 20.

The completed form for appearing for the entrance examination along with a DD for Rs. 100 drawn in favour of Finance Officer, University of Mysore and completed admission forms should be submitted to Prof K.
