Neurolinguistics is the study of the neural base of language. It explores the relation between language and the different parts of the brain. It deals with how language is represented and processed in the brain. The science deals with the mechanism underlying comprehension and production of language. It also covers language disorders - both acquired and developmental.

The study of Neurolinguistics involves analysis of the effects a person’s internal and external communication has on the brain. Here, the essential sources of knowledge are CT scans and MRIs, which facilitate measurement of brain activity during language tasks in normal and lesioned brains.

Neurolinguistics is an interdisciplinary science of Neuroscience, Linguistics, Cognitive Science, Neuropsychology, Chemistry and Computer Science. It is closely related to psycho-linguistics, which deals with cognitive mechanism of language. These two fields not only collaborate to test and evaluate each other’s theories but also complement endeavours for advancement.

It finds application in the fields of sociology, anthropology, language arts, philosophy, cultural studies, communication, public speaking, education and therapy.
