The mathematics departments of almost all universities in the State and many of their affiliated colleges offer the two-year, full-time M.Sc. course in mathematics.

For instance, the Department of Mathematics on the Karyavattom campus of the University of Kerala in Thiruvananthapuram conducts the course, which comes under its credit-and-semester system. Admission is based on an entrance test and the marks in the qualifying examination. The admission notification may be expected during June or July. Details can be had from www.keralauniversity.edu

The Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) admits students to its M.Sc. course through the Cusat Common Admission Test. Entry qualification is a B.Sc. degree in mathematics with at least 55 per cent marks in aggregate for optional subjects.

Prominent institutes

The Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, offers an integrated Ph.D. programme in mathematical sciences for those with a first-class degree in science with mathematics under the 10+2+3 system. Those belonging to the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes require only pass marks. (www.iisc.ernet.in).


The National Board for Higher Mathematics, Department of Atomic Energy, Anushakti Bhavan, CSM Marg, Mumbai – 400 001 provides scholarships for pursuing postgraduate studies in mathematics. Applicants must have a B.Sc. degree or should be final-year degree students with a good academic record (first class in all years from plus two). The candidates should be below the age of 23. The National Institute of Technology, Calicut, offers in Integrated M.Sc. Tech degree programme in mathematics and scientific computing leading to a Ph.D.

Those with a B.Sc. degree in mathematics or applied mathematics or a B.Tech. degree in any discipline with first class or minimum 60 per cent marks (50 per cent for those belonging to the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes) are eligible for admission. Selection is based on the marks in the qualifying examination and performance in the test and interview. The tuition fee is Rs.12,000 a semester.

The programme intends to train mathematics graduates who are confident of applying their knowledge to practical problems of industry, including software and R&D organisations.

The first three years (six semesters) of the programme will prepare the students to do research. After successful completion of three years, they will be awarded the M.Sc. Tech degree in mathematics and scientific computing. If the students so desire, they can do research and obtain a Ph.D. Students with the M.Sc. Tech degree will be eligible for campus recruitment (www.nitc.ac.in).


The Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata, offers two-year, full-time Master's degree courses in mathematics and statistics — M.Math and M.Stat. The M.Math course is conducted at its Bangalore centre and the M.Stat. course at its Delhi and Chennai centres. Those with a degree in mathematics or statistics are eligible for admission. Those who complete the course with good marks can go for the two-year M.Tech. course in computer sciences (www.isical.ac.in/academicprogramme.php).

The Sant Longowal Institute of Engineering and Technology, Longowal (Punjab), conducts M.Sc. and Ph.D. courses in mathematics. Selection is based on a national-level entrance test (www.sliet.ac.in).

The Chennai Mathematical Institute, T. Nagar, Chennai – 600 017 offers M.Sc. and Ph.D. programmes in mathematics for graduates in mathematics. Selection is on the basis of a national-level entrance test and an interview. In Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode are the test centres. M.Sc. students get a scholarship of Rs.5,000 a month. Ph.D. scholarships start at Rs.16,000 a month. (www.cmi.ac.in)


The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) in Chennai, Mumbai, Kanpur, Kharagpur, and Delhi conducts the M.Sc. mathematics programme.

The IIT Roorkee conducts M.Sc. courses in applied mathematics and industrial mathematics and information programmes. Admission is through the Joint Admission Test (JAM).


The Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad, a deemed Centrally funded university in mining, mineral, and earth sciences, offers a two-year M.Sc. mathematics and computing course. Admission is based on a national-level entrance test. (www.ismdhanbad.ac.in).

Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, offers M.Sc. courses in mathematics and statistics. Those with a B.Sc. degree with 50 per cent marks in mathematics and statistics are eligible for admission. Selection is based on a national-level entrance test. (www.bhu.ac.in).

A list of more universities and colleges offering the M.Sc. course in mathematics may be had from the university handbook published by the Association of Indian Universities, New Delhi, which will be available for reference at the employment information and guidance bureaux at all universities in Kerala.


Those who have an M.Sc. degree with at least 55 per cent marks can go for research leading to a Ph.D. Those who qualify in the National Eligibility Test (NET) for Junior Research Fellowship conducted by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research or the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) conducted by IITs are eligible for scholarship and fellowships to do research.

Some universities conduct their own entrance tests for admission to Ph.D. programmes. However, those who have qualified in the NET or GATE will be exempted from those tests.

The departments of mathematics of the universities of Kerala and Calicut and Cusat provide research facilities. Leading research institutes such as the Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Chennai, the Harish Chandra Research Institute, Allahabad, and the Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Bangalore, provide research facilities.

Job prospects

Since the world is becoming more and more data-focussed, highly qualified mathematicians or statisticians have much scope.

Those with a Master's degree or a Ph.D. in mathematics or statistics can become business analysts, software engineers, research officers, data analysts, investigators, lecturers, and so on. To become a lecturer, one should qualify in NET.

The Union Public Service Commission conducts an examination almost every year for recruitment of Indian Statistical Service officers. Postgraduates in mathematics, statistics or applied statistics may take the examination.

The Staff Selection Commission occasionally recruits statistical investigators under the subordinate statistical services across the country.

Those who have a degree with statistics or mathematics or economics or commerce (with statistics as a paper) as one of the subjects are eligible to appear for the examination. The age limit is 26.

Private companies in the fields of insurance, information technology, and software give job opportunities for graduates and postgraduates in mathematics.

Smart and intelligent graduates in mathematics can utilise the job opportunities in the banking sector.
