The Humanities and Social Sciences Entrance Examination-2009 (HSEE 2009) for the five-year integrated M.A. programme of IIT-Madras will have a new pattern this year.

The examination is of three hours’ duration and has two parts. Part I is an objective type question paper for two and half hours administered through computer.

It covers questions on English and comprehension skills, analytical and quantitative ability, and general knowledge covering the areas of Indian economy (since Independence), Indian society, contemporary world affairs (post-World War II), and environment and ecology. Part II is an essay for 30 minutes.

The exam on May 3 will be conducted in Bangalore, Chennai, Coimbatore, Hyderabad, Kochi, Kolkata, Mumbai and New Delhi.

The programme gives exposure to Humanities and Social Sciences to help students appreciate the “multidisciplinary” nature of fundamental concepts. Compulsory courses in the programme include ecology and environmental science and life sciences. Basic courses include statistics, mathematics, IT and communication skills.
