I am a third year student of B.Tech (Civil Engineering). I want to pursue higher studies by doing M.Tech in IITs. Give me details of their admission process. What are the various specialisations available under Civil Engineering? Also provide me the details of the universities that offer M.Tech (Civil Engineering).

The applications of Civil Engineering are the broadest and the most visible among all other branches of engineering. The credit for all those mighty power plants, dams, airports, seaports, highways, inland waterways and industrial plants goes to Civil Engineers.

After completing B.Tech (Civil Engineering), you have several options to choose from to pursue your M.Tech. The specialisations available under Civil Engineering are Structural Engineering, Environment Engineering, Hydraulics Engineering, Traffic and Transportation Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Construction Management, Hydraulics and Water Resources Engineering, Geoinformatics, and Engineering Geosciences.

As you want to pursue M.Tech (Civil Engineering) from an IIT, you have to focus on increasing your academic score and performing well at GATE. IITs are the most sought-after institutes for engineering degrees. So, you must secure a good rank in GATE to get a seat in IITs. The admission procedure includes an interview. Note that during the admission process, 70 percent weightage will be given to GATE score and 30 percent to academic merit.

In India, there are several universities/ institutes that offer M.Tech programmes in Civil Engineering. These courses are full-time and the duration is two years. Details of courses in some of the institutions are listed below.

The IITs in Chennai, Kanpur, Delhi, Kharagpur offer M.Tech (Civil Engineering) with specialisations like:Building Technology and Construction Management

Environmental Engineering

Geotechnical Engineering

Hydraulic and Water Resources Engineering

Structural Engineering

Transportation Engineering

Candidates who qualify in bachelor’s degree in engineering from educational institutions approved by AICTE are eligible for the programme. They need to appear for GATE and take the test in CE. For details, log on to www.mtechadm.iitm.

Osmania University, Hyderabad offers M.Tech (Civil Engineering). The eligibility criterion is BE/ B.Tech/ AMIE in Civil Engineering/ Construction Engineering or equivalent. Admission is based on GATE rank. If sufficient GATE qualified candidates are not available, admissions are made on the basis of an entrance test conducted by the University. For details, log on to

The Department of Civil Engineering, AU College of Engineering, Vishakapatnam offers ME in Civil Engineering with Structural Engineering, Environmental Engineering & Management, Hydraulics Coastal & Harbour Engineering, Soil Mechanics & Foundation Engineering, and Structural Engineering & Natural Disaster Management.

Candidates who qualify in B.E. Civil Engineering of AU or equivalent, AMIE with Diploma in Civil Engineering are eligible for these courses. Admission is based on the valid GATE rank. If seats are not filled with GATE rank holders, admission will be based on the entrance test conducted by the university. For details, log on to www.andhrauniversity.
