AT WORK: A geography student on a project.

I am a Plus Two student. I would like to pursue higher studies in geography. Please let me know about the colleges offering B.Sc. and postgraduate courses in geography and related career prospects.

Graduate and postgraduate courses in geography are offered in the science or humanities streams. Geography is a blend of social and pure science.

The three-year degree course in geography provides a foundation for higher studies in specialised areas, such as physical geography, geomorphology, geoinformatics, remote sensing, hydrology or water management and plant and soil science.

The B.Sc. geography course covers physical geography topics, such as biogeography, climatology, geomorphology and hydrology. BA geography focusses on topics related to human geography.

Geography has a multidisciplinary link with natural science through physical geography and earth science courses, such as meteorology, oceanography, geomorphology, biogeography (distribution and ecology of plants), zoogeography (distribution and ecology of animals) and natural resources.

Physical geography is more important, as it deals with the human use of earth. For instance, agriculture depends on climate, weather and formation and erosion of soils. It deals with the impact of natural hazards, such as tornadoes and earthquakes.

Geomorphology deals with the formation and development of land forms through the process of deposition and erosion. It is one of the major branches of physical geography, with a close link to geology and other systematic sciences.

Study facilities

The three-year degree course is being offered by a few colleges in Kerala.

Under the University of Kerala, the following affiliated colleges conduct the B.Sc. geography course: University College, Thiruvananthapuram and Government College, Karyavattom, Thiruvananthapuram. Selection is based on marks or grade obtained in the Plus Two examination in any subject combination.

Under the University of Calicut, the HM College of Science and Technology, Manjeri, and the Government College, Chittur, Palakkad district, offer the BA geography course.

Some universities and colleges in other States also offer the BA and B.Sc. courses. Details of more universities and colleges can be had from the University Hand Book published by the Association of Indian Universities, which is available for reference in the University Employment Information and Guidance Bureaux functioning under all universities in Kerala.

After graduating with good marks, you can do a postgraduate programme. MA and M.Sc. courses are offered in geomorphology, tropical geomorphology, environmental geomorphology and so on. Geographical Information Systems (GIS) deals with computer-based storing and processing of information about the surface of earth and land use. Those keen on pursuing it should know computer programming and using the system to acquire, manage, display and analyse spatial data in digital form.

Geomorphology, climatology and oceanography, disaster management, advanced cartography, biogeography, population and settlement, regional planning, cultural geography, political geography and remote sensing are part of the content of MA courses offered by some universities.

In Kerala, the Department of Geography of Kannur University offers a two-year four-semester M.Sc. geography (geoinformatics) course. Those who have a B.Sc. or BA degree in geography with a minimum 50 per cent marks in part 3 (main and subsidiary together) are eligible for admission. Selection is through an entrance test.
