In order to encourage women scientists, the University of Madras will introduce an award exclusively for them on March 8 (Women's Day), vice-chancellor G. Thiruvasagam announced on January 5. He was speaking at a meeting on ‘Exposure to women scientists in career and funding opportunities', organised by the department of science and technology, New Delhi, and the department of zoology, University of Madras.
Proposals for the women scientists award can be sent to the university. H.B. Singh, officer-in-charge, Women Scientists Scheme (WSS), DST, New Delhi, who spoke on the occasion, said the aim of the WSS was to bring in more women into the mainstream science research and to provide an opportunity for those women who had taken a break in their career for various reasons.
The department encouraged and supported women with scientific pursuit by giving them fellowships and remuneration. “Freshers are not eligible to apply for the M.Sc and Ph.D programmes supported by the WSS,” Mr. Singh said.
The minimum age limit to apply for M.Sc is 27 and for Ph.D the maximum age limit is 50.
