Thanks to the University Grants Commission, students of Kakatiya Government Degree College able to make a little money by growing mushrooms
The students of Kakatiya Government Degree College have been learning skills to make an earning while pursuing their academics. Thanks to the University Grants Commission (UGC) that has sanctioned certificate course in mushroom cultivation under career oriented programme. Now the students of the college were able to make a little money by growing mushrooms in backyard of their houses.
The UGC has extended financial assistance as seed money for the commencement of the programme at the college situated in Hanamkonda during the academic year 2011-2012.
“Following the increased health consciousness, the people are looking for quality and nutritive food and mushrooms is naturally an excellent choice as they are a rich source of vitamins and minerals,” said course co-coordinator Dr. K Sadasiva Reddy.
In view of the growing demand for the mushrooms, the college has decided to launch the mushrooms cultivation course for helping the students to make an earning while studying. Mr Sadasiva Reddy said, “most of our students are first generation learners belonging to the below poverty line families and landless rural poor. This programme helps them greatly.”
The course was intended to provide and equip the skills and concepts to the students to produce the edible mushrooms in bulk quantities.
Imparting the knowledge of spawn production, harvesting and marketing techniques were also a part of the training, the course coordinator explained.
Students who have passed Intermediate with BiPC stream could apply for the course.
