Dravidian University celebrates foundation day

Dravidian University at Kuppam celebrated its 13th Foundation Day in a grand manner last week. Roads and Buildings Minister Galla Aruna Kumari inaugurated the Rs.30 lakh mess hall and the first floor of the examinations building.

Ms. Aruna Kumari said that the varsity, built with integrating different cultures and promoting mutual understanding as the cornerstone, was mooted and supported by great people like Late N.T. Rama Rao. MLC R. Reddeppa Reddy felt modern education should include moral values and ethics.

Tamil Nadu Energy Development Agency Chairman and Managing Director R. Christodas Gandhi said the Dravidian culture stood for concepts of love and equality and appreciated the varsity for bringing education close to the people and not making it an ‘elitist affair'. S. Chellappa, principal secretary, Department of Tourism and Culture, called vegetarianism an integral part of Dravidian culture, quoting classical writings.

Vice-Chancellor Cuddapah Ramanaiah spoke on the importance of research in the fast changing modern world and urged all the departments to contribute. ‘While even Karnataka varsities do not have a Department for Tulu, we have one,” he proudly announced. SVU Statistics Department observed the ‘World Statistics Day' on Wednesday, coinciding with the magic date ‘20.10.2010'. United Nations Statistics Commission (UNSC) has declared the theme for the year as service, professionalism and integrity. Speaking on the role of mathematics in data management, Prof. V. Thangaraj of Ramanujan Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics, University of Madras, laid stress on coordinating disciplines such as mathematics, statistics, computer science and operations research. Dr. Alladi Mohan, head of Medicine at SVIMS, spoke on ‘Diagnostic approach in clinical research through Bayes theorem'.
