Lack of efficiency in the examination system in various universities has always sparked off protests among students. Delay in publication of results and conduct of examinations is a common factor affecting all varsities in the State. Mahatma Gandhi University continues to receive brickbats for the delay in the publication of results. Students point out that examinations are not conducted as per the schedule. For many, the delay meant losing a chance for applying for higher studies. Some had to experience very tense moments because they could not produce the mark list before the companies that selected them through campus recruitment. Students in engineering colleges affiliated to Cochin University and MG University fear that the delay in publication of results would hamper their prospects in the job market. During the academic year 2005-2006, students pointed out several instances where the results got delayed for months. Failure to stick to an exam schedule has been one of the major problems that led to a complete breakdown of the examination system. Despite coming out with an examination schedule, very few varsities could stick to it during last year. Lack of professionalism created a situation in which the system crashed following frequent changes made in the timetable set for examinations. University authorities say that there exists a shortage of staff in the examination system. The increase in the number of educational institutions getting affiliated to the varsity had also worsened the existing problems. G. KRISHNAKUMAR
