Workshop for SHGs

A workshop sponsored by the Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology on ‘creation of scientific awareness' for the members of women self help groups of Nagapattinam district was held at the AVC College, Mannampandal near Mayiladuthurai recently. C. Senthilvel, secretary, AVC Educational Institutions, delivered the inaugural address and K. Thiyagesan, principal, presided. R. Selvam, Director, Peace Foundation, Mayiladuthurai, gave a special lecture and demonstration on ‘women entrepreneurship and their development of economic status.' R. Saravanamuthu, Head, Department of Plant Biology and Plant Technology, spoke on ‘edible mushrooms, their nutritive values and cultivation techniques.' M. Varadharajan, Head (in-charge) of the Department of Zoology, gave a lecture on ‘Api culture.' K. Sankarganesh, lecturer in Plant Biology and Plant Technology Department, explained the various horticultural techniques, grafting and laying. SHG members from different rural areas participated in the workshop. S. Sivaraman, member of AVC College Committee and head of the Mathematics Department, delivered the valedictory address.

Book release

Under the auspices of the Tamil Department of the Thanthai Hans Roever College, Perambalur, ‘Muthamizh Vizha' was held recently. K. Varadharaajen, Chairman, Roever Group of Educational Institutions, presided over the function. Nanjil Sampath, noted orator, was the chief guest and he delivered a special address motivating the students to go on learning. He stated that language is a great weapon to unite and bring together people from different walks of life. Mr. Sampath said that language is the life of the whole society. He explained the greatness of the Tamil language by drawing touching examples from Tamil literature. P. S. Joseph, principal, offered felicitations. The book titled ‘Vazhkain Sirpangal' authored by Selvi of II MA Tamil literature, was released by Mr. Nanjil Sampath and the first copy was received by Dr. Varadharaajen. Students presented cultural programmes at the end.

Microscale techniques

– elaborated

The Chemspark Association of Chemistry Department of Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan College of Arts and Science for Women, Perambalur, organised a State-level workshop on ‘microscale technique in Chemistry.' A. Srinivasan, founder, Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan Group of Institutions, presided over the function. S. Murugan, former head of the Department of Chemistry, ST Hindu College, Nagercoil, was the resource person. He explained about microscale techniques and its advantages. Further, he introduced the modified equipments used for microscale experiments.

Dr. Murugan defined microscale chemistry as an environmentally-safe pollution prevention method i.e. green Chemistry, of performing chemical processes using small quantities of chemicals without compromising on the quality and standard of chemical applications in education and industry. He underlined the benefits of microscale chemistry as cost effective, productive, reduces chemicals used by promoting waste reduction at source, improves laboratory safety, saves money and decreases experiment time. In the laboratory session, Dr. Murugan demonstrated on the various microscale techniques in organic and inorganic analytical methods in Chemistry. E. Uma, head of the Department of Chemistry, offered felicitations.

Alumni association inaugurated

The Alumni Association of the MNSK College of Engineering, Pudukottai, was inaugurated at a function recently. P. Balamurugan, principal of the college, presided over the function and inaugurated the association. Swaminathan assumed charge as the president of the new association, Ganesh as the vice president, Ramesh Khanna as secretary and Pradeep, treasurer. M. Mathivanan, professor and many old students spoke.

Papers presented

The State-level convention of Indian Society of Technical Education (ISTE) of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry was held for two days at Mahendra Group of Institutions, Mallasamudhram, Namakkal. M. Radhakrishnan, principal, Sudharsan Engineering College, was awarded the Best ISTE chapter Chairman for Engineering Colleges' for his outstanding contribution and professional commitment.

Pramkumar, final year ECE student of the Sudharsan Engineering College, won the ‘best ISTE student of Sudharsan Engineering College for the year 2011.'

In the technical sessions, papers were presented by faculty members of Sudharsan Engineering College – V. Ayyappan spoke on ‘mobile learning,' N. Parameswaran, assistant professor of English on ‘classroom strategies for teaching English to technical students' and M. Chandrasekar, Chief Administrative Officer and K. Venkatraj, training and placement officer on ‘employable engineering.' The papers presented by Professors Ayyappan and N. Parameswaran were adjudged the best.

Campus recruitment

The IT giant CSS Corp ICT conducted campus recruitment at the Chendhuran College of Engineering and Technology, Pudukottai. The HR team of the concern gave an inspirational talk to the students before the commencement of the recruitment procedure. Three rounds of tests were carried out to select the students. At the end of the whole process, offer letters were issued to three students. R. Vairavan, College chairman, said that more companies have assured to visit the college for recruiting the final year students.

Personality development programme

Personality development programme on ‘leadership quality and time management' was organised by the Department of Microbiology of Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan College of Arts and Science for Women, through BAFV Association. A. Srinivasan, founder and chairman, Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan Educational Institutions, presided over the programme.

It was organised to develop the personal attitude of students as a leader and help them attend campus interviews efficiently. R. Shanmuganathan, soft-skills trainer, Lamps Institute, Ariyalur, was the resource person. He quoted the words of Vivekananda, Martin Luther King, Mother Theresa to motivate the students. R. M. Meenakshi, advisor and K. Baghirathi, principal, P. Gajalakshmi, head, Department of Microbiology, offered felicitations.
