Networking trends

The Computer Science and Engineering Department of V.V. College of Engineering, Thisaiyanvilai, conducted a one-day seminar on ‘Recent trends in networking' recently. Resource person R. S. Rajesh of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, demonstrated the fundamentals and all kinds of networks using multimedia presentation. He spoke on application of ‘ Cloud and pervasive computing' in network and network security system. He motivated the students to undertake projects in networks and pointed out the research opportunities for students and the funding from government and private institutions.

Workshop on English

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering of Einstein College of Engineering, Tirunelveli, conducted a two-day workshop on effective English communication recently. Chief guest S. Manova Raja, who handled the technical session, shared his views on the importance of effective communication skill.

He also insisted that regular reading of an English daily to update their vocabulary would be of great help to them and motivated them to actively attend the campus interviews.

He conducted a small exercise for improving their listening power and taught about time management and gave some valuable suggestions to utilise the entire day effectively.

The Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering conducted a seminar on ‘Contemporary research avenues in embedded systems and its applications using soft computing' recently. M. Subramanian, Associate-Vice president of Hexaware Technologies, Chennai, was the chief guest. He gave guidance on systematic procedures to be followed in research which he said was paramount . V. Gomathy, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, National Engineering College, Kovilpatti, spoke on ‘Soft computing tools using fuzzy logic' and N. Senthilkumar, Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Mepco Schlenk Engineering College, Sivakasi gave an overview on ‘Embedded system hardware and technology trends.'

On MCTS

A ‘Microsoft certified training programme' was conducted recently at PET Engineering College, Valliyoor. Chief Guest Vijayalekshmi Stephen explained the importance of the programme and the advantages of holding the Microsoft Certificate. She motivated the students to develop their placement skill by getting the MCTS certificate. She explained the immediate employment availability and the importance regarding courses such as ASP .net, Java, General Programming, Oracle DB2, System Audit and Security Engineering to the students to motivate them. Final-year and pre-final year students of all engineering branches, MCA and MBA participated.

Signal processing

The Electronics and communication Department of V.V. College of Engineering conducted a one-day seminar on ‘ Applications of transformers in signal processing' recently. Chief guest A. Shenbagavalli, Professor, Electronics and Communications Department, National Engineering College, Kovilpatti explained the concepts and fundamentals in signals, advancement in the field of digital signal processing and signal analysis. She correlated the signal characteristics with day-to-day activities and pointed out the importance of transformers in signal processing and its applications.

Global warming

Sri Adhi Chunchanagiri Women's College, Cumbum, in association with the Central Earth Science Department, New Delhi, organised an awareness programme on weather conditions and global warming recently. B. Devaraju, Professor of Gandhigram Rural Institute, was the chief guest.

In a special lecture, Agni Marimuthu, former professor of VSUN Polytechnic College, spoke on the topic “2C and U.” He briefed the challenges and also opportunities available for commerce students. HE said that everyone should utilise chances that come their way and know how to face challenges and hindrances in life.

Heat transfer

The R.V.S. College of Engineering and Technology, Dindigul, conducted a one-day workshop on ‘ Advances in heat transfer' recently. The chief guests, S. Suresh and K.R. Balasubramanian, professors from National Institute of Technology, spoke on nano fluid, heat transfer enhancements, compact heat exchangers and modern steam generators. Students from 20 engineering colleges and universities participated.

The college also conducted an industry-institute interaction recently. N. Athavan, Deputy Manager, (Helicopter Division) Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, spoke on challenges students faced during transition from campus to corporate life and expectations of corporates and gave tips to make them industry-ready.

The N.P.R. College of Engineering and Technology, Natham, conducted a seminar on ‘Mobile and communication' recently. A. Ahmad Yunus, Sub-Divisional Engineer, BSNL, narrated various modules in mobile communication and frequency allocation. SDE S.K. Geetha spoke on different generation of landline communication.

Feminism

A workshop on ‘Feminism' was conducted on September 30 by the Tamil Literary Association of Standard Fireworks Rajaratnam College for Women, Sivakasi. G. Josepin Mary of Fatima College, Madurai, spoke on the history of feminism. P. Kanaga, Head, Department of Tamil, delivered the presidential address. M. Padmapriya welcomed the gathering. P. Kalaiselvi proposed a vote of thanks.

On data mining

Department of MCA of P. S. R. Engineering College, Sivakasi organised a seminar on ‘Data mining concepts' on September 21. R. Prabakaran welcomed the gathering. K. R. Viswanathan, Principal, delivered the presidential address. M. Selvakumar and T. N. Gopinath of Global Techno Solutions were the resource persons. Mr. Selvakumar explained the history of data mining, its application and data warehousing. Mr. Gopinath explained the JDM concepts and Java FX application. R. Anandaraj proposed a vote of thanks.

Madurai Kamaraj University College, Sattur, organised a function to mark Teacher's Day recently. G. Thirupathi, college pupil leader, welcomed the gathering. The Principal, P. Chelladurai, delivered the Teacher's Day address. The Head, Department of Tamil, V. Mahendran, also addressed the gathering. A ‘patti mandram,' moderated by S. Saravanan, was conducted. S. Medical camp

The National Service Scheme of Devanga Arts College, Aruppukottai, organised a free medical camp and anti-tobacco awareness campaign at Madathupatti in collaboration with the Department of Health. B. Ravikumar, Principal, presided over the inaugural function. NSS Programme Officer S. Ganesan welcomed the gathering. Dr. Sakthivel and Dr. Jeyakumari delivered lectures on the ill effects of tobacco use. Kanmani, NSS Programme Officer, proposed a vote of thanks.

Kabaddi tourney

The fourth zonal-level kabbadi tournament of Anna University of Technology was held at Pannai College of Engineering and Technology, Sivaganga. Teams from 12 engineering colleges participated in the tournament which was inaugurated by Pannai M. Karthikeyan, chairman of the college. The Principal, S. Thabasu Kannan, presided over the inaugural function. Mohamed Sathak Engineering College, Kilakarai, won the tournament, followed by KLN College of Information Technology and PSNA College of Engineering and Technology. T. Anand Kumar, Director of Physical Education, proposed a vote of thanks.

The Department of Physics of Devanga Arts College, Aruppukottai, organised a State-level seminar on ‘Recent trends in micro electro mechanical systems.' C. Somasundarar, Head of the Department, welcomed the gathering, K. S. S. Soundaiah delivered the presidential address. B. Ravikumar, Principal, and C. Sankaravel, Director, offered felicitations, N. Punithavelan of Vellore Institute of Technology, delivered the keynote address. The seminar also featured paper presentation and other competitions. S. Pandiarajan proposed a vote of thanks.
