The Department of Management Studies of Sri Krishna Arts and Science College organised a management meet called “Officios ’08.” The valediction was held in the college premises and prizes were given to students who had presented technical papers. The chief guest S. Ranganathan encouraged students to take up civil services as a career option.
The PPG College of Health Sciences organised a first aid training programme recently. It provided training on basic care that was required during the time of emergency and which was essential to all professionals. Nearly 300 students from 15 colleges attended the training.
The Department of Environmental Sciences of the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University observed the World Environment Day recently. The theme was Carbon Dioxide – Kick the Habit. The staff and PG students demonstrated the various causes of global warming and their effects on the ecosystem. The agricultural scientists were told to undertake research on soil carbon sequestration and control CO2 emission into the atmosphere.
The Department of Mechanical Engineering of the Hindusthan College of Engineering and Technology organised a workshop on “Recent Advances in Automobile Engineering”. Students were told about the recent inventions and latest research and development in the field of automobiles. Representatives from various automobile houses delivered lectures on relevant topics.
The Department of Social Work of the Karpagam Arts and Science College organised an international faculty meet recently. Penny Clark, field educationist co-ordinator, and Mubarak Ali, faculty, School of Social Administration and Social Work, Flinders University, Australia, spoke on the pattern of education in social work practices in Australia. There was also an interaction session with the students.
The School of Commerce and International Business of the G.R. Damodaran College of Science organised a lecture by Gibson G. Vedamani, Chief Executive Officer of Retailers Association of India. He spoke on “The Future Challenges of Retailing in India” and said that emergence of organised retail would happen in a big way in India.
The Human Development Department and Gandhian Studies Centre of the Avinashilingam University for Women organised a seminar on “Gandhian Philosophy and Human Rights”. The Gandhian system of education was shown as a positive effort for bringing about a synthesis of physical, intellectual, emotional, aesthetic, moral and spiritual values in human beings by Vice-Chancellor Saroja Prabhakaran.
The NSS Unit and Tamil Ilakiya Mandram of the Maharaja Arts and Science College jointly organised a cultural programme titled “Natupura Nandavanam”. Students staged shows where they depicted the various folk art forms. A book on “Natupura Maruthuvam” was released on the occasion. Experts spoke on the importance of women empowerment and the role men played in the development of women.
The Youth Red Cross volunteers of the Sri Ramakrishna Engineering College observed World Earth Day by conducting a rally. The rally began at NGGO Colony and reached Thudiyalur passing through Vadamadurai on Mettupalayam Road. Placards bearing the message “Save Our Mother Earth Planet” were carried by the students, and flyers carrying do’s and don’ts for a clean environment were distributed to the public.
Bharathiar University recently conducted a conference on classical Tamil. It was discussed by experts to encourage more youth to do research in Tamil. There has been a dearth of youth coming forward to learn Tamil. Sirpi Balasubramaniam chaired the conference and told the participants how to introduce good courses in Tamil at the undergraduate level and make students interested in the language.AMUTHA KANNAN
