The Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) Hyderabad campus celebrated its first annual day coinciding with the bhoomi puja day and Telugu New Year Ugadi on Friday.

It was a grand event with cultural events, felicitations and a special dinner leaving some wonderful memories for the students and the staff.

BITS Hyderabad Director V.S. Rao says that it was an occasion that everyone was looking forward to and they ensured that it left fantastic feelings among everyone.

It was the first step for a long journey for the institution that had earned respect among the students on par with IITs and IIMs not just in India but also abroad.

The BITS Hyderabad campus started its first academic year in August, 2008 with a batch of 540 students as part of the Integrated First Degree Courses being offered here.

These include 6 B.E. (Hons.), 5 MSc. (Hons.) dual degree, B.Pharma and MSc (Tech) Information Systems courses.

The plan for a new campus was conceived by Late K.K. Birla, the then Chancellor, in November 2005, and subsequently the bhoomi puja was performed on March 30, 2006.

As promised the campus kicked-off exactly 16 months after the foundation stone was laid.

The campus boasts of the best infrastructure - with a main building, hostels and staff quarters, a central library, workshop and labs as well as a medical centre, shopping and banking facilities as well as recreational activities.

A state-of-the-art computer network connects the entire campus, with internet facility in every room.

Lecture theatres are provided with the best in technology in terms of seating, acoustics and projection systems.

Associations

Following the same structure as Pilani, the Hyderabad campus has all the student bodies, clubs and associations along with the student faculty committee, disciplinary committee and academic counselling board.

The academic flexibilities which are the highlight of the BITS education system have already been implemented here.

These include the dual degree system, practice school system, horizontal as well as vertical transfers among the courses and the campuses and admissions in both the semesters.
