Under the auspices of Tamil Nadu Science Forum, a special inter-college quiz programme was held at Pudukottai recently. V.B. Srihari, S. Praveen Raj and S. Balaji, who represented the MNSK College of Engineering at Vallathirakottai in the district, won the district-level second prize in the contest. Jothibasu, another student of the college, won the special prize in the elocution competition. M. Nagarajan, Chairman of the college and P. Mariuthu, Principal, felicitated the students.

T. Ramasamy, Registrar, Bharathidasan University, was the chief guest at the annual convocation of the Naina Mohamed College, Rajendrapuram near Aranthangi. In his address Dr. Ramasamy said that the attitude among research scholars and scientists to proceed to foreign countries was one of the reasons for the backwardness of the country.

Dr. Ramasamy distributed degrees to 116 graduates. K. Ravuthar Naina Mohamed, Principal, presided. N. Mohamed Farook, founder and correspondent of the Naina Mohamed Educational Institutions, was present.

The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering and Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering of the Chendhuran College of Engineering and Technology, Pudukottai, organised a State-level symposium recently. T. V. Krishnan, additional general manager, BHEL, Tiruchi, was the chief guest. M. Somasundaram, managing director, Amman TRY Steal Private Limited, was the guest of honour. He stressed the importance of renewable sources of energyR. Vairavan, Chairman, Chendhuran Group of Institutions, presided. A. Naveen Sait, principal and L. Pappayee, professor and Head Department of ITspoke.

The A. R. R. College of Education, Valayapettai, Kumbakonam, conducted a State-level seminar. K. S. Subhramaniyam, correspondent of the college, inaugurated the seminar and Mathews Tharakan, Principal, presided. Alexander Joseph was the resource person and he delivered a lecture on ‘educational psychology.'

The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, Mookambigai College of Engineering, Keeranur, conducted a staff development programme on ‘VLSI design.' The programme was sponsored by AICTE.

C. P. Ravikumar, technical director of University Relations, Texax Instruments India Limited, delivered the inaugural address. S. Rajaram, associate professor, Thiagarajar College of Engineering, Madurai, spoke on ASIC and FPGA design. M. G. Venugopalan, Principal of the college,presided.

The English Department of Annai College of Arts and Science, Kovilacheri, Kumbakonam, organised a seminar on ‘Methods of simple spoken English.' Philominraj, former Head Department of English, Government Arts College, Kumbakonam, who was the chief guest, said that there is a wrong notion among the students that learning English is difficult. M. I. Humayun, secretary of the college, C. Mani, Principal, S. Palanivelu, Head Department of English, offered felicitations.

The Students Chapter of Computer Society of India (CSI) was inaugurated at the Sudharsan Engineering College. M. A. Maluk Mohamed, Principal, M. A. M. College of Engineering and chairman, Tiruchi chapter of the CSI, was the chief guest. N. V. Ramamoorthy, Principal, presided.

The valediction of the programme of capacity building for industrial needs was held at the Thanthai Hans Roever Institute of Polytechnic College, Perambalur, under the auspices of Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology. Chinnaiyan from Muthiah Polytechnic College, Chidambaram and Neelayadhakshi, Head Department of Computer Science, Valivalam Desigar Polytechnic College, Nagapattainam delivered special address. R. T. Udayakumar, Principal of the polytechnic college and Naguldev, Coordinator of the Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology, spoke.
