Free Software Foundation(FSF), Tamilnadu is conducting a regional convention on free software for academicians and researchers on November 14. The IT Club of the Institute for Financial Management and Research (IFMR), EDGE is hosting the convention.

Starting point

FSF has been actively involved in promoting the usage free software in the state by conducting workshops and seminars.

A number of college students and academicians are associated with it through the GNU/Linux user groups.

This convention will be a great starting point for those wanting to employ cutting edge technologies that are available in the free software domain for research purposes.

It will help add a new dimension to teaching by employing tools which can be studied and modified by the students as well as the faculty.

In-depth discussions on different topics pertaining to free software and open models are expected to take place during the convention.

Topics

Some of the sessions planned include ‘Free software–a perspective', ‘Tools and Models used in academics and research' and 'Verilog and GTK Wave'.

These sessions will be led by Dr. L. Pratap Reddy, Director, Board of studies, Jawaharlal Nehru Technical University and Prof. Shankar Balachandran of Indian Institute of Technology, Madras.

Tools

A separate session on free software tools in engineering education has been arranged for engineering college faculty which would be handled by Prof. M.A. Kumaran, Head of Computer Science Department, Jaya College of Engineering. He is expected to share his experiences in implementing FOSS in education.

The event is a run-up to the National Convention of Academicians to be held on December 16, 17 and 18 in Hyderabad.

These Conventions are part of the activities of Academics Initiative of Free Software Movement of India (FSMI).
