A Rotary Youth Leadership Award workshop was conducted by Rotary Club of Coimbatore Metropolis at the SNT Global Academy of Management Studies and Technology. Jaykumar Ramdoss, managing director of Mahindra Pumps Limited, Coimbatore, spoke on the needs of the youth and ways to prepare them to meet the needs of the industry. S. Purushothaman, secretary of the Sri Niketan Trust, was the chief guest.

A workshop on ‘Automotive Engineering' was conducted by the Department of Mechanical Engineering of KPR Institute of Engineering and Technology. P.S. Gill, mentor and research analyst, Paramek Technologies, New Delhi, handled the session. The focus of the workshop was on IC engines. The parts of vehicles were explained in detail with the help of animated videos. A real engine was dismantled and their parts and functions were explained. Students were given a case study based competition and technical quiz in automobile engineering.

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering of Karpagam College of Engineering organised ‘Ripple ‘12', a technical symposium. P. Arunkumar, director of Nordia Infotech, inaugurated the symposium and spoke on ERP, SAP and latest trends in information technology. Paper presentation, best manager, googler, technical quiz, code debugging, etc., were some of the events that were held as part of the symposium.

A workshop on “Android Application Development” was organised by the Department of Computer Science and Engineering of Hindusthan Institute of Technology. S. Subramanian, IRTS, spoke on the significant role of mobile communication in Indian Railways.

RVS College of Arts and Science organised an off-campus recruitment rally recently. Representatives from DELL, Chennai, recruited from final year students of the 2012 batch from various arts and science colleges. The candidates were recruited to work in the voice and non-voice processes.

The Department of Commerce of Sri Krishna Arts and Science College organised Magnum Meet, the valediction of the Commerce Association. Prasanta Kumar Padhy, head, Department of Management, Berhampur University, Odisha, and R. Chandrasekar, advisor, Aegis Global Academy, Coimbatore, were the resource persons. The guests addressed the students and impressed upon them the importance of developing leadership qualities and the need to be flexible to excel in any field. M. Karthik Kumar, final year B.Com. student, received the best outgoing student of the year award.

The annual day celebrations of Sree Narayana Guru Polytechnic College were held recently. M. Padmanabhan, Anna IAS Coaching Centre of Bharathiar University, was the chief guest. He urged students to have role models in life to help them achieve their goals. G.P. Godhanavalli, social worker, asked the students to follow the teachings of Sree Narayana Guru. V.P. Prabhakaran, secretary of the college, presided.

A blood donation camp was held at Guruvayurappan Institute of Management. This was held in association with Indian Medical Association. The camp was inaugurated by Dr. Senthil Kumar from the IMA. He spoke on the significance of donating blood to save lives. Over a 100 students participated and donated blood. Students had also organised an educational campaign on the need and the advantages of blood donation.

The annual day of JCT College of Engineering and Technology was celebrated recently. K. Karunakaran, Vice-Chancellor of Anna University of Technology, Coimbatore, was the chief guest. He spoke on the need to be educated. Education built human capacities such as power to reflect, make choices, seek a voice in society, and enjoy a better life. A potential teacher should inculcate a sense of dedication and spirit of service in the students. The ability of a nation to make best use of its knowledge or brain power would ultimately determine its place in the world, he said.

Dr. NGP Business School of Dr NGP Institute of Technology organised a CEO Meet for management students. Raajkumar K. Nair, chief executive of Haymarket Advertising Private Limited, spoke on overcoming barriers and placing the organisation in a leading position in the field of advertising and marketing.

N. Subramanian, managing director of Habasit Iakoka Private Limited, spoke on the importance of selecting the right area of expertise and interacting with industrial personnel to gain insight into the industry. Pooranie Goppi, chief executive officer of Supradent Drugs Limited, Dharmpauri, spoke on loan licensing policy, pharmaceutical industry's scope and growth in the future.

The ninth graduation day was held at Sree Saraswathi Thyagaraja College, Pollachi. C. Swaminathan, Vice-Chancellor of Bharathiar University, was the chief guest.

He delivered the graduation day address and distributed the degree certificates. On the importance of education, he said that it was the most effective instrument to acquire knowledge, nurture social and moral values and to make youth socially sensitive, responsible and forward looking.

As many as 400 candidates received degree certificates. S. Venkkatesh, Secretary of the college, presided over the function.

The college day celebrations of Vidyasagar College of Arts and Science, Udumalpet, were held recently. Theodore Baskaran, writer and trustee, WWF India, was the chief guest.

He spoke on developing awareness about the environment because it was man's indiscriminate use of forest and its wealth that was turning out to be the worst threat. He gave away prizes to university rank holders and those who had excelled in academics and other extra curricular activities.

The annual day of PA College of Engineering and Technology was celebrated recently. Sathya Thopalli, vice-president of Mahindra Satyam Private Limited, Hyderabad, was the chief guest of the day. Iakoka Subramaniam, managing director, Habasit Iakoka Private Limited, was the guest of honour.

Best outgoing students from each department received special awards. More than 300 students received medals and certificates for sports and extra-curricular activities.

Sasi Creative School of Business organised a lecture on ‘Innovative Manufacturing, Design and Practices at Hirotec India Private Limited'. Brian Andrew Hopkins, director and executive vice-president of Hirotech India Private Limited, Japan, spoke on the topic. He explained the flex-lean system, its impact on cost savings and efficiency, the supply chain management practices, etc. Rajdeepan Swaminathan, managing trustee of the institution, presided over.

The Departments of Computer Science and Information Technology of Bharathiar University conducted a national workshop on ‘Grid and Cloud Computing'. Resource persons from various institutions handled related sessions. Theoretical and hands-on sessions formed part of the workshop.

NSS units of Sri Ramakrishna Institute of Technology organised a special camp at Government Middle School, Kalampalayam. Various activities such as health camps, environment protection awareness, home based business opportunities, road safety, etc., were held. In addition, students organised sports and cultural programmes for the school children and also planted saplings.
