The student handbook and prospectus for programmes offered on distance education mode by the Indira Gandhi National Open University are now available at the university's regional and study centres.The last date for receiving the filled-in applications along with the programme fee at the Chennai regional centre is July 31, says K. Soundaravalli, regional director, IGNOU.The regional centre is at CIT campus Taramani, Chennai-600 113, and the sub-regional centre at Corporation building, PP Chavadi, Theni Road, Madurai-16. IGNOU offers a variety of Master's and Bachelor's degree programmes in Humanities, Arts, Social Sciences, Computer, apart from interdisciplinary areas such as Dietetics and Food Service Management and Health Care Waste Management (launched recently) for the session commencing July 2006.Master's programmes are offered in Sociology, Political Science, Public Administration, History, Tourism, Economics, Commerce, Library and Information Science, Dietetics and Food Service Management, English and Hindi. Bachelor's degree programmes are offered in the fields of Arts, Social Work, Commerce, Science, Tourism Studies, Computer Applications, Library and Information Sciences, etc. There is no age bar and no entrance examination for admission to these programmes. Candidates who have completed 10+2/three-year diploma are eligible for bachelor's degree and graduates in any discipline are eligible for master's programmes.The IGNOU support includes counselling, library facilities and multimedia inputs such as VCD, teleconferencing, interactive radio counselling, and Edusat during weekends.The programmes are delivered on a credit-based system. There would be continuous assessment through home assignments, practical and project work.
