A new official portal, www.skillindia.com, that aims to provide a one-stop resource base and information repository for those seeking training in a wide range of trades and vocations and also serve as an employment portal for skilled personnel was formally launched last week. The portal, set up by the Department of Science and Technology in coordination with United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), as part of project called ‘Skills and Knowledge for Improved Livelihoods and Living Standards’ (SKILLS), already provides information on about 50 trades. The site provides the curriculum, course material, basic vocation related information and a step by step learning basket where competency-based curriculum can be accessed easily. The number of trades covered would be increased to about 200 in the next few months.
The SKILLS project, launched in 2004-05, promotes new training curriculum and facilities in emerging technology skill areas for the benefit of unemployed youth.
The portal also has a unique feature – a virtual “Employment Exchange.”
Other features it will boast of in the future include soft skills development, entrepreneurship information, trade-wise discussion forums and online evaluation.
JSSATE – Science and Technology Entrepreneurs Park based at Noida – has developed this portal as am implementing partner of this project.
