The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) plans to introduce a `System of Online Application Processing' (SOAP) to avoid wastage of paper and to also make it easy for candidates to apply. According to UPSC Secretary S. P. Gaur, efforts were on to introduce the online system before the next year's preliminary examination. The authorities were discussing issues like mode of fee payment and mode of submission of forms and a final decision would be taken soon. Mr. Gaur said UPSC had also represented to the Centre for the deletion of languages like Chinese, Spanish and German from the list of optional languages and add other optional languages like Maithili, Bado and Santhali. Regarding the issue of negative marking in the preliminary examination held on May 20, Mr. Gaur said negative marking would depend on the number of options given in multiple choice questions. If a question has four options then one-third of a mark will be deducted whereas one-fourth of the marks will be deducted if the question has five options.
