Students who obtain high marks (not less than 60 per cent marks) in their BE/ B.Tech. degree course and have a valid GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) score in the relevant discipline with high percentile can explore various higher study options.

Good score in the GATE is a pre-requisite for admission to M.Tech. degree courses. GATE is an all-India-level examination conducted every year jointly by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc.), Bangalore, and the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).

In interviews for admission to M.Tech. courses, 70 per cent weightage will be given to the GATE score, and 30 per cent to academic merit. BE/ B.Tech. and B.Arch. degree holders and those in the final or pre-final year of such programmes are eligible to appear for GATE.There are several higher study options for meritorious graduates in civil engineering at the postgraduate level. The specialisations available for M.Tech. civil engineering include structural engineering, environment engineering, hydraulics engineering, traffic and transportation engineering, geotechnical engineering, construction management, hydraulics and water resources engineering, geoinformatics, and engineering geosciences.

Other suitable options are Master of Design (M.Des.); Master of Building Engineering and Management (MBEM); M.Arch. with specialisation in housing/ architecture conservation/ industrial design/ urban design; M.Tech. degree course in structural engineering / computer-aided structural analysis; Master of planning with specialisation in environment planning and transport planning; Master of Business Administration; postgraduate diploma in industrial engineering and management.

There are several engineering colleges in India that offers M.Tech. programmes in civil engineering with different specialisations.

In Kerala, the College of Engineering, Sreekariyam, Thiruvananthapuram, offers M.Tech. degree course in civil engineering with geotechnical engineering, structural engineering, hydraulic engineering, environmental engineering, traffic and transportation engineering as specialisations. Each specialisation will have 12 seats.

The TKM College of Engineering, Kollam, conducts M.Tech. degree course in civil engineering with specialisations in structural engineering and construction management.

The Government Engineering College, Thrissur, offers M.Tech. civil engineering with environment engineering as specialisation.

Details of more colleges/institutes that offers M.Tech. or other postgraduate-level programmes in civil engineering / related subjects can be collected from the handbook of engineering published by the Association of Indian Universities, New Delhi, which will be available for reference at all University Employment Information and Guidance Bureaux.

List of AICTE-approved engineering colleges and its programmes also can be had from the web site www.aicte-india.org.

In Tamil Nadu, there will be a common entrance test (TANCET) for admission to ME / M.Tech. programmes. Details can be collected from the web site www.annauniv.edu/tancet2011.

The centre offers excellent teaching research and industrial interaction activity in the field of product design.

Applicants should have a degree in engineering, design or architecture. The selection for admission is based on performance in design aptitude test and an interview to be conducted at the centre towards the end of April or May every year. The short-listing for test is done on the basis of CEED (Common Entrance Examination for Design) or GATE score. For details, visit www.iisc.ernet.in, www.cpdm.iisc.ernet.in.

The Industrial Design Centre of the IIT Bombay offers M.Des. course in industrial design, visual communication, animation, interaction design, and mobility and transportation.

The entry qualification for these programmes is a bachelor's degree in engineering / architecture / design / interior design or professional diploma in design from the National Institute of Design or Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology University (CEPT University) with at least 55 per cent marks.

For M.Des. degree course in visual communication, animation and interaction design Programmes, BFA degree holders or those with a master's degree in arts / science / computer applications can apply.

The short-listed candidates with a valid CEED score will be called for a written test and interview. CEED is a Common Entrance Examination for Design conducted by IITs every year for admission to M.Des. programmes.

A weightage of 25 per cent will be given for CEED score and remaining marks will be divided between the written test and interview. Web site: www.idc.iitb.ac.in.

IIT Delhi offers M.Des. degree course in industrial design. The course focuses on the art and science of industrial design for creating innovative product concepts. This programme is open to graduates in engineering and architecture with at least 60 per cent marks. The selection is based on the CEED score and interview. Web site: www.iitd.ac.in.
