I am pursuing my B.Tech. I want to do MBA in Power Management. Which institutes offer the course? What are their admission and eligibility criteria? What are my career prospects after completing the course?

Power sector is expanding rapidly in response to the growth endeavours of the country. On one hand, the State Electricity Boards are thoroughly restructuring themselves to cope with the changing demands.

On the other hand, private players are actively participating in the generation and distribution sides of the power sector.

With these developments, the sector needs professionals in engineering, finance, commerce, logistics, human resource and law, to tackle its old and new challenges.

The MBA Power Management programme equips the students with skills and abilities to find solutions to problems across the generation, transmission and distribution of power. The programme imparts knowledge of the concepts and practical skills required to lead and manage the power sector efficiently and effectively.

Apart from basic subjects that are taught in the management programmes, this course includes domain specific topics like structure of power sector and its regulations, management of power transmission and distribution, power environment interface, risk and hazard management, and energy conservation and audit.

After the completion of this course, the management professionals can pursue career in fields like power -planning, generation, transmission, distribution, resource management, trading, financing, policy making, and laws and regulations. Opportunities are available in both public sector and private sectors.

In public sector, organisations like National Thermal Power Corporation, Power Finance Corporation and Power Grid Corporation of India Limited, hire MBA graduates.

The recruitment process includes written test and interview. Coming to opportunities in private sector, the recruitment processes vary with companies. Some private companies hire through campus recruitments also.

Biotechnology finds application in various fields. A B.Tech programme in Biotechnology deals with applying engineering principles to Biotechnology, to solve problems in different fields.

After B.Tech in Biotechnology, you can pursue M.Tech in Biotechnology. Several institutes like Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Hyderabad (www.jntu.ac.in), IIT Kharagpur (www.iitkgp.ac.in) and VIT University, Vellore (www.vit.ac.in) offer the course.

The eligibility criterion is BE/ B.Tech in relevant discipline. Admission is based on performance at GATE or entrance test conducted by the institute.

Biotechnology is a research oriented field. The research results in huge volumes of date that has to be stored, retrieved and analysed for future purposes. This led to the emergence of Bioinformatics. This is a promising option for Biotechnology graduates.

IIIT, Hyderabad offers M.Tech in Bioinformatics. The eligibility criterion is BE/ BTech in CS/ IT/ Biotechnology/ Bioinformatics or Master's degree in Programming/ Mathematics/ Sciences.
