With multipurpose indoor stadium, synthetic hockey turf
Tiruchi is being geared up to host big-time sporting events. A synthetic hockey turf of international standard has already been created and more sports facilities are coming up at the Anna Stadium complex.
The synthetic turf on the hockey ground at the stadium is expected to give fillip to the game. The Rs.3 crore-facility established by the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT) with funding from the State government is the fourth of its kind in Tamil Nadu.
Substantial planning and execution had gone into establishing the facility. Works pertaining to construction of peripheral drain and storage sump, surface levelling, and blacktopping of the hockey ground were completed prior to commencement of the laying of turf in mid-January.
Craig Dove, a professional sports installer from England along with a technical team from Mumbai, had laid the turf in two weeks. The turf was imported from The Netherlands.
The construction of a multi-purpose indoor stadium at a cost of Rs. 1.77 crore at the Anna Stadium complex is nearing completion. Once in place, the stadium can host a range of events including basketball, volleyball, badminton and handball with a capacity to accommodate nearly 2,000 spectators.
The squash court that is coming up at the sprawling stadium complex is sure to gain popularity among fitness freaks. First phase of the works has been completed at a cost Rs. 9 lakh.
The stadium is also likely to get a synthetic athletic track, a long-felt need. The synthetic track, once in place, will be a boon for the promising athletes.
The synthetic surface for the tennis courts in the stadium is also on the anvil. The other facilities in the Anna Stadium include football ground, swimming pool, gymnasium and a sports hostel.
