These are days when films are increasingly being crafted ‘bigger' in all ways - budget, casting and in the promotion and distribution. However, there is a steady stream of talent being showcased in a genre that is becoming popular.
That is in the category called short film, a field that is relatively not very complex in the real sense of the term ‘film-making'.
That's the psycho-thriller ‘Artificial' for you, one that writer-director-producer Vijay Vemuri calls an ‘out-of-the-box' product, leaving a lot for the individual imagination of the viewer.
It revolves around a young couple and their personal life, a chapter that is sought to be made intriguingly-exciting.
It's actually a fantasy of the young housewife, played by Supriya of ‘Sashesham' fame and is spread over a time span of a few days. The US-returned techie Vijay Vemuri has tried to showcase a chapter in their life, an intensely-personal facet of their lives.
Interestingly, the story revolves around a mask that the housewife (the character doesn't have a name, with the script just portrays her as a ‘wife') who finds fantasy-filled moments. Actually, the filmmaker leaves it to the viewer to understand what he/she wants. Suffice it to say that it is a rather adult screenplay that would have different couples in modern life viewing it differently.
“I have been told that it's a difficult subject for an amateur to choose but so what. I just wanted to delve into my latent talent for story-telling. I do understand that I have left it rather blank towards the end but people with a discerning eye have appreciated it. The fact that ‘Artificial' has had over 10,000 hits in less than a week on ‘YouTube' is satisfaction enough for me,” he says.
The cast includes Abhinav Gomatam, who plays the wife's husband, Deepthi Naidu, Kranthi, Mahesh Kumar Kathi, Shwetha Chowdary and Rohan.
Cinematography by Shyam deserves mention, with the use of soft filters and lighting and the camera movements too. Music is scored by Satya Kashyap, helped along with a Latin music track composed by Kevin MacLeod.
