Vrooming into the new age

THE word ‘automobile' comes from the combination of the French ‘auto', meaning self and the Latin word ‘mobilis', meaning moving. Thus we have a vehicle which moves by itself. Cars have evolved from the days of the cranked models to the modern day sophisticated ones. Today, for many cars are an extension of themselves, displayed as fashion or an accessory. But then Hyderabadis have seen and heard of the Nizam's passion for the expensive cars, when cars just meant the domain of the rich rulers.

At a time when the only mode of transport in Hyderabad was the Buggie, the Nizam's splendour was seen through the array of Packards and the pride of World's costliest car, the Rolls Royce. Over the past two decades the number of ‘expensive car owners' has been on the rise.

Today we find Hyderbad home to some of the biggest names in the automobile industry World over adorning the roads and the front yards of the ‘Neo-Nizams', the rich and famous industrialists. Of course, many people buy expensive cars, even if they can't afford it, just to show-off or project an image or wealth or importance.

We have the premium brands like Audi, Mercedes, Volkswagen, Volvo, BMW, Nissan, etc.

The World's favourite and premium two wheeler brand, Harley Davidson, too has made Hyderabad its home with the opening of the first showroom in the country in this city of the ‘Nizams'.

Speaking about automobiles in Hyderabad it would be incomplete to skip the name of R K Saboo motors. We caught up with the Chairman of RKS Motors, Vinay Saboo, and the man's passion for his work is almost contagious! He owes his success and attributed the growth of the business to his customers, who in his opinion are his real assets. Says the man in all honesty, “The only way to grow is to realize that customers are not leeches. They are not trying to extract anything. Understanding that it is the customer who pays for my bread is what is most essential. If not for them, my workers and I would not earn our bread… Treating them well will always be our duty”.

When the meet is impromptu and nothing is organized to impress, you surely want to believe what you hear, and one meet with the man himself leaves you with no other choice. He is direct, assertive and yet sensitive to the needs of the customer. This is a combination that is likely to fetch him more and more customers, only to add to his already vast clientele of 2.5 lakh customers!

The automobile industry in Hyderabad is on the rise, and like never before! “Internet has empowered the younger generation like I would never have imagined. Earlier people would walk in with little or no idea about which car to buy, the technicalities of each model would be explained to them and they would make a choice depending completely on our advice. But things have changed. A young man who walks in through the door knows exactly which model he wants and has his reasons for the choice! This is extremely progressive! Hyderabad's auto-market is only going to soar higher, with more and more new and fancy brands entering the market”.
