The 14th Ugadi Puraskar awards for Telugu films were presented at a star-studded ceremony with doyens from Tollywood gathering in the city to celebrate Telugu New Year at a function organised by Sri Kala Sudha Telugu Association on March 23.
Twenty film personalities and four eminent persons from various walks of life were honoured with the coveted ‘Ugadi Puraskar' and ‘Mahila Rathna' for their achievements for 2012.
The annual awards are presented as a mark of appreciation to people who have contributed immensely in the field of arts and culture. ‘Sriramarajyam' was adjudged the best film and Nandamuri Balakrishna and Nayanthara as the best actor and actress. Bapu won the best director. Best cinematography award went to P.R.K. Raju and best dialogues to Late Mullapudi Venkataramana for ‘Sriramarajyam'. Taman was awarded the Special Jury Award (music director) and Sruthi Hassan the best debut actress for ‘O My Friend.'
Best playback singers were S.P. Balasubrahmanyam and Chitra. Best music director award went to Ilayaraja for ‘Sriramarajyam'.
Other honoured with Ugadi Puraskars were Naga Chaitanya, Tamanna and Prakash Raj.
The 'Mahila Rathna' awardees were Dr. Anjali Devi for Theatre and Arts, veteran playback singer B. Vasantha, Anitha Guha for Bharatanatyam and Akkamma Krishna Murthy for Social Service.
Presenting the awards, the Tamil Nadu Governor K. Rosaiah commended the association for identifying young talent and honouring the personalities in the film industry.
Veteran producer Katragadda Prasad, Founder and President of Sri Kala Sudha Telugu Association Bethireddy Srinivas and Vice-President Bethireddy Sairam also participated.
