Good food unites people. VIPASHA SINHA on expats who donned the chef’s hat and found friends
Nasrin Karimi. Seo Jae Gul. Ciro Cattaneo. Certainly not Indian-sounding names. But, there is hardly any foodie in Chennai who is not aware of them.
These three expatriates spotted a dearth of restaurants that offer cuisines of their respective countries, and quickly moved in to fill the void.
The success of their initiatives – Bella Ciao, Shiraz Art Cafe and In Seoul – derives partly from a full-hearted effort at giving a taste of their countries in every sense of the term.
For instance, Shiraz Art Cafe, lays out a special spread for Nou Roz, the Iranian new year. In Seoul offers vignettes of East Asian culture through its interiors.
But their popularity is largely the result of their cosmopolitanism.
They marry uniqueness to universality.
