Out on the move, the scorching summer heat could drain the last ounce of energy out of our system. Copious intake of fluids and fresh fruits are advised mainly for those who are on the road when the sun is at its peak. Ideally, they can carry water, juice or some cut fruits, but always in a hurry to catch up with work, it is not in their of priorities.

Like every summer, on-road refreshment stalls selling juices and cut fruits have sprouted throughout the city.

A boon to motorists and pedestrians this season, it is short-term business for pavement sellers.

The stretch on Mahalingapuram near Pushpa Nagar in Nungambakkam has a variety of pavement shops selling muskmelon, watermelon, mangos, grapes and other fruits.

Kumari, a seller here says, business is good as motorist stopover to enjoy a slice of watermelons or muskmelons. “Now it is muskmelons and mangos that are available in abundance with watermelon fading into the background.”

Call centre employee Kiran Kumar terms the stretch as a ‘quencher.' “I stop here for a fruit juice every working day before heading to my office in Adyar.

A glass of juice feels good and doesn't burn a hole in my wallet,” the youngster jovially adds.

Pavement shops

These temporary pavement shops selling fruits this summer are stationed in roads were the traffic movement is often free flowing. “We already have enough trouble handling the police personnel on patrol and beyond that if our customers are the slightest cause for a traffic bottleneck we are finished, avers a fruit juice-seller in Mylapore.

For Rajesh Chand, a wholesale dealer from NSC Bose Road, the pavement near Anna Salai is a sure stop every afternoon. “I head to Besant Nagar for business purposes every working day and I return through beach road.Sathukudijuice sold near Anna Square is something to die for these hot days,” says Chand who claims it to be fresh and rejuvenating.

Vehicles selling sugarcane and lemon juices mostly confined to roads near beaches have also cropped up in many parts of the city. Stretches in Valluvar Kottam and Spur Tank Road always have thirsty motorist and pedestrians thronging to juice sellers. “I used to do business on the beach; now I have temporally moved here to cash in on the demand,” adds a sugarcane juice seller on Spur Tank Road.

Thaneer pandals

Last but not the least are thethanneer pandals(water sheds) setup by various political parties at some parts of the city. The mud pot under thatched roofs with the best quencher for the summer – water, is the poor man's delight.

Unfortunately, post election many thanneer pandals in the city have disappeared.

Now muskmelons and mangoes are available in abundance.
